Data Protection Manager 2012 Single Instance Storage

Hello,

I have already tried to search for an answer for this question but still don't really "get it". I understand that previous versions of DPM use Single Instance Storage, this is the first time I have used DPM and I'm starting at version 2012 installed on server 2012. In my testing I can see that DPM 2012 seems to create a new volume for each system its backing up, so everything looks separated across different volumes, I also notice that data deduplication feature is enabled which is assume DPM did that during installation, however it isn't actually enabled on any particular volume so it isn't doing anything. Naturally I would have assumed that DPM 2012 being a brand new product and compatible with server 2012 that it would utilise the data deduplication feature of the server..... but it's not. so my question is, does DPM 2012 utilise data deduplication or single instance storage, if not how can we save lots of data from duplicate backups of things like DC's, File servers and Exchange Mailbox servers? all of which have high levels of duplicated data.

Also, I don't full understand the difference between SIS and De-dupe, am I correct in saying that SIS just removes the need for an entire duplicated file (regardless of its filename) and de-dupe actually compares bits and bytes of data across multiple files regardless of file type, name or size...?

thanks for any further information

Steve
