DPM 2012 with SP1 - Windows Server 2012 R2 File Server with Deduplication Volumes Enabled Tape Backup

$

Hi,

We've been using DPM for many years and have now upgraded to DPM 2012 SP1 Rollup 7. We can happily backup our Windows Server 2012 R2 deduped data volumes and it works fine.

But, when we try to then do end of Month backup on to a Tape, it suddenly fails. The error message we get is :

"The Operation failed since DPM was unable to access the file/folder \\?\GLOBALROOT\Device\HarddiskVolumeShadowCopy33533\4876e0d9-0fbc-4b13-b8cd-a76a054e0eb3\Full\HappyDays\SmartDoc3.doc on  DPM01.domain.local. This could be due to the file/folder being corrupt or the file system on the volume being corrupt. (ID 2036 Details: The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable (0x80070570))"

I can confirm that there are no errors on the file system or file corruption as reported by Chkdsk and also as we can open/write to the same files both, from original disk location and DPM disk backup.

Yet, we can backup the same source files that it complains are corrupt if we disable data de-duplication on that volume?

Anyone come across this issue or can help with suggestion?

Kind regards,

Luthfur

Manual replica creation of DeDup Volumes

Hi,

we are on the way to update a lot of our file Servers to Windows Server 2012.
DeDup will be enabled on the volumes.

We are going to to backup these voumes via DPM2012SP1.

Now my question: Is it possible to create a Manual replica (for example with the help of USB external drives) for dedup enabled volumes or does the replica creation process have to be triggered from within DPM console so that all data will be transfered over the Network?

Thanks in advance

Move server from one DPM 2010 to another DPM2010

$

Hi,

I have following simple setup

Server1--> DPMserver2010_A<--Server2

Both server1&2 are protected by DPMserver2010_A.  Now, DPMserver2010_A  does not have enough space so I installed DPM2010 in another server  (DPMserver2010_B).

So, now I want to move the server1&2 to DPMserver2010_B.

Server1--> DPMserver2010_B<--Server2

Server1 is DC&file server and server2 is database(MSSQL2008) server.

Hope it is clear.

I was wondering how to fix it? Any help appreciated :-)

DPM 2010 - Consistency checks stops after 23 hours

When running a consistency check on a very large amount of files, the checks repeatedly stops after 23-24 hours.

How do I solve this, so that I get a full consistency check and a good replica?

Error communicating with manually installed protection agent on client

$

I have a client that I couldn't install the agent on from the DPM Administrator Console (I'm using 2012 R2)

To install I did the following:
Pushd to the directory for the latest agent on the DPM server
Ran DPMAgentInstaller_amd64.exe <DPM server name>
Rebooted the protected machine.
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Data Protection Manager\DPM\bin\SetDpmServer.exe - dpmServerName <DPM server name>

This came back OK saying it had added the firewall rules although the Windows firewall was disabled on the workstation anyway.

On the DPM server:

Install Agent
Attach Agents> Computer on trusted domain
Selected client.

This finished successfully.

The agent Status in the Management> Agents screen is listed as Error (see below for details). The machines are in the same domain and there are no firewalls in the way. I've been careful to set it up as per the instructions, what may I be missing here?

Protection agent version:    4.2.1235.0
Error:    Data Protection Manager Error ID: 270
The agent operation failed on <protected client FQDN> because DPM could not communicate with the DPM protection agent. The computer may be protected by another DPM server, or the protection agent may have been uninstalled on the protected computer.
If <protected client FQDN> is a workgroup server, the password for the DPM user account could have been changed or may have expired.
Recommended action:    Check the following to troubleshoot this issue:
1) If the agent is not installed on <protected client FQDN>, run DpmAgentInstaller.exe with this DPM computer as a parameter. For details, see the DPM Deployment Guide.
2) To attach the computer correctly to this DPM server, run the SetDpmServer tool with the -Add option on the protected computer.
3) If the computer is protected by another DPM server, or if the protection agent has been uninstalled, remove the protected data sources on this computer from active protection. Then, remove the entry of this computer from the Agents tab in the Management task area.
4) If <protected client FQDN> is a workgroup server, run SetDpmServer with the -UpdatePassword flag on the protected computer and Update-NonDomainServerInfo.ps1 on the DPM server to update the password.
5) If the DPM server and the protected computer are not in the same domain, ensure that there is a two-way trust setup between the two domains.
If the computer is protected by another DPM server, or if the protection agent has been uninstalled, you can remove the record of the computer from this DPM server.
Remove the record of the computer from this DPM server.

Microsoft DPM 2010 MMC Crash

I switched a protected workstation from a server backup to a client backup.

Now when I go to the "Recovery" tab MMC crashes. If I remove the new protection group all works fine.

I did tell it to retain the old data. This may be (Hostname) listed below in the database. The new PG created was as hostname.domainname. Even after removing the PG this entry remains in the database listed below.

I found reference to multiple duplicate names in SQL and ran:

Select ServerName, Domainname from dbo.tbl_AM_Server

This returns the same results with the PG active and removed.

Hostname | Domainname
Hostname.domainname | Domainname

Is there a safe way to resolve this by removing the database entries?

Deduped Folder - Initial Replica creation fails

Following scenario;

File-Server is a 2012R2 Standard box, having it's files stored on an ISCSI attached NTFS formatted drive with deduplication turned on. DFS-R is also active on the volume.

DPM is a Windows Server 2008R2 Server, with DPM 2012R2 running on it.

Most replica's are created ok, but this one fails to create an initial replica.

Is there some limitation for DPM in this scenario? Do I need to install DPM on a 2012R2 box?

File recovery points also affecting VMs

I have a protection group that contains among its members a DFS root share. Because of this I get the option to configure file recovery points but find that it is creating recovery points for the VMs as well as the DFS. Why is it doing this? Is there any way to have the DFS in the same PG but only have the file recovery points only apply to the files so that it doesn't impact our VMs (the issue was noticed when we found databases were temporarily unusable as they were being frozen for backup)?

Secondary protection of deduplicated volume

$

We are protecting a deduplicated volume of a few terabytes to a primary DPM server, and then to a secondary one. I have noticed that the secondary DPM Server has allocated and used significantly more disk for the replica volume than has the primary. Why would this be? it almost looks like the secondary has protected the data in an unoptimised state (I have checked that the dedupe role is installed on the DPM servers).

Thanks

Consistency Check seems to run indefinatly

Hi,

I have DPM running at our main office.  We backup a remote office server with 1.5TB of data over a VPN connection.  It was working fine until our local storage pool drives suffered physical failure.  All fixed and had to recreate protection groups.  Initial backup of remote server was slow, and when it finished it said it was inconsistent.  I ran a consistency check and it took a really long time and got interrupted several times.  Then it finally looked like it finished with no errors.  I tried to create a replication point and it failed saying it was not consistent.  I started the consistency check over again.  This time it ran and it counted up to 2,034.12MB in the Data Transferred column.  It has now been stuck at that number for 30 hours but still lists as in progress.

In looking at dpmra.exe on using process monitor the protected computer, when data was being transferred I could see file name in the logs.  Now that it has stopped counting all i have seen for the last 30 hours is registry open, close and query keys. A sample from the process monitor log is below.  Anyone know if this is normal, or if something is stuck, or if there is some other problem?

Thanks,

Derek

I am having trouble getting my file backup to run after an upgrade from DPM 2010 to DPM 2012 SP1. Due to the upgrade every single protected data source entered into consistency check, this is expected behaviour, and most of these cc has finished without problems. I have a single agent left, that constantly fails. Almost immediately after a cc is started the agent throws the following event in the application log of the client server.

Faulting application name: DPMRA.exe, version: 4.1.3313.0, time stamp: 0x50ad9909

Faulting module name: FileWriterHelperPlugin.DLL, version: 4.1.3313.0, time stamp: 0x50ad994d

Report Id: 2fcb217d-2444-11e3-928c-00155d0a5800

I’ve tried uninstalling/installing however this has not solved the problem.

Any help to solve this issue will be greatly appreciated.

New Initial backup of a DeDup volume - problem

$

Hi,

unfortunately a collegue of mine enabled DeDup on a volume of a Win 2012 Protected Server.

DPM Server is running DPM 2012SP1 UR1. DeDup role is not installed.
Now we get inconsistency error Messages...

We have installed a new DPM 2012R2, UR2, running on Windows Server 2012R2, DeDup role is activated on the Server.
My solution would be:

1. Remove Protection on "old" DPM  2012 Sp1 Server for the affected PS
2. "setdpmserver.exe" on PS to new DPM 2012R2
3. Attach PS to DPM2012R2
4. Update DPM Agent on affected PS from the DPM2012R2 console to uptodate R2 Agent
(is there a reboot required?)

5. Configure PG for whole volume (dedup enabled) and start replica creation

You think this works?

Is there anything I have to take of when starting the backup of a dedup volume?

Thanks in advance

Data Deduplication, Defrag & DPM 2012 R2 Churn

$

0

We have a protected 2012 R2 server that has Data Deduplication enabled. DPM tried to create a recovery point and ran out of disk space. When I check to see what happened, the job had transferred over 43GB of data.  This is way outside of the norm for this protection group.  Upon investigation I found that a scheduled weekly defrag had run.  I assume this to be the source of the churn.  Can anyone provide an guidance on the interaction of the these processes?  The scheduled defrag was enabled by default.  I assume we'll need to disable this?  I have never defragged my VM's as it would cause massive churn for the VM backup's in DPM.  But this was not a VM backup, just a backup of files on a deduplicated volume.

Thanks,

Scott

DPM 2012 with SP1 - Windows Server 2012 R2 File Server with Deduplication Volumes Enabled Tape Backup

This could be due to the file/folder being corrupt or the file system on the volume being corrupt. (ID 2036 Details: The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable (0x80070570))"

I can confirm that there are no errors on the file system or file corruption as reported by Chkdsk and also as we can open/write to the same files both, from original disk location and DPM disk backup.

Yet, we can backup the same source files that it complains are corrupt if we disable data de-duplication on that volume?

Anyone come across this issue or can help with suggestion?

Hi,

we are on the way to update a lot of our file Servers to Windows Server 2012.
