Post-backup script runs even if backup job fails

$

Hi,

I have been asked to back up a SQL database backups. It means, we have a SQL database which is backed up by SQL server itself: every day a full backup is executed, and every 30 minutes a transaction log backup occurs. These files should be quick accessible for a 1 day,  therefore, it is not a solution to backup SQL with DPM as SQL workflow; instead of this, DPM should back up this folder as file folder.

So, in DPM scripting configuration, I've specified two scripts:

A pre-backup script checks if any SQL backup job is performing. When SQL performs a custom backup script, it generates a file with .stop exstension. DPM pre-backup script checks presence of this file. If this file exists, then pre-backup script generates another file named "DONOTDELETE" for post-backup script.

A post-backup script checks if file "DONOTDELETE" exists; if exists then it will not clean up the backup folder; else, script will delete anything in backup folder.

Both the scripts send me an e-mail about results.

the DPM schedule executes once per a day. Yesterday, I've noticed that the backup job was failed due to insufficient replica volume space, but the post-backup script was executed (an e-mail from post-backup script was sent) and the backup folder on the SQL server has been cleaned. And an hour later, a backup job was executed successfully again.

Thanks God this issue was occured in dev environment. So, two questions:

1. Is it by design that post-backup scripts run regardless of success of backup job?

if YES, then

2. Can I prevent execution of post-backup scripts in case if backup job fails?

DPM Secondary Server Failure

$

Hello,

We've had an issue with our secondary DPM server where a planned update to SCDPM (from 2012 to 2012R2) caused some of the protected clients to not successfully create replicas. At this point I decided to restore the database which seemed like a good idea at the time as the backups were working, right up until they stopped working.

After restoring the database, none of the issues were solved and I had gained a new problem -- I could no longer edit the protection groups on the secondary server at all.

At this point I was stuck. I couldn't get the backups to run, and I couldn't edit anything on the server to make it work. I was left with one option as far as I or Google could see -- Blow the Secondary server away and start from scratch. The secondary is only used as a DR option, so this wasn't a big deal. I removed the agent from the Primary server, uninstalled DPM from the Secondary and deleted the database. I then installed DPM2012 R2 fresh, installed the agent on the Primary from the Secondary and created a new protection group.

And herein lies the problem: I cannot see the node for "Protected Servers" listed underneath the Primary server.

Now, I know there can be all sorts of drama's related to moving protected servers around in a Primary-Secondary scenario as DPM databases tend to hold onto information. However everything I've read so far would indicate that the issue would lie on the DB of the Secondary server, which I've completely blown away and as such shouldn't be a problem.

I have noticed that the Primary server maintains the Server ID of the Secondary server, even after it was uninstalled and removed from the environment, under the tbl_AM_Server table of it's database. I'd have thought that this should be removed upon removing the agent from the server, however it is still there. Can I manually delete this row from the database, and reinstall the agent to try and force it onto a new (and potentially correct) ID?
I've also noticed that when I install the agent onto the Primary (from the Secondary), the DPMServerID of the Primary server, as listed in the database on the Primary, does not change to point to the Secondary -- is this expected behavior?
If I do a dance from within the database and point the DPMServerID field of the two servers to each other, I can then expand the node from within the Secondary and the Primary will list the "Protected Servers" node, showing the Secondary Server. Obviously that's not what I want, as I don't want to back the Secondary up to itself, but it does show that the group can be displayed, and may be related to the Primary not believing that it has any protected servers to back up. Is there a table or a field in the DB that lists secondary servers for protection points, or any other reason why the Primary would believe that there are no valid servers for the Secondary to look after?

Now, i thought maybe I'm missing some files or folders, so I've verified the folder and service permissions as being correct. The MTATEMP$\PSInfo folder was missing from the Primary server, so I recreated it copying the settings from the Secondary. Still no change in behavior.

I also get an enumeration error on a share when the Secondary expands to the Primary from within the protection group. Not sure if this is related? It's been happening from before the server died, so I'm thinking not.

Any suggestions on what I can look at would be greatly appreciated. It's pretty awful that we have a product that allows itself to get into this position. I know what we have done isn't exactly a "Supported Scenario", but I wouldn't have expected this much trouble.

Thanks,

Nick.

DPM 2012 R2 and DFS Dedup

I wanted to make sure I am understanding the cravat with dedup and DPM. If I backup a deduped VHD I lose item level recovery but if I backup the folders within the VM I still get item level recovery, yes?

I wanted to add I am looking to move our redirected folders that are in DFS (my documents and such) to new DFS boxes running Dedup provied I am not losing anything. I also want to store my DPM storage pool VHDX there and dedup it.

Running DPM 2012R2 (4.2.1338.0) on Windows 2012 R2 with at latest patch level.

Recently changed the file server and at first we were running with deduplication enabled. After seeing this error (see title) when running backup to tape, we turned deduplication off.

Now deduplication is turned off on the file server but we are still getting the error every time when performing tape backups. There are no issues performing recovery points, synchronizations or consistency checks to disk. We have only had one successful tape backup, just after we migrated to this file server but none since. After running the first few consistency checks DPM fixed thousands of items but now there are no items to correct and the check goes through.

The backup goes to 170 GB and then fail with error: (ID 2019 Details: An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host (0x80072746))

As I understand it, the tape backup does not retrieve information from the protected server, instead it shuffles data from the DPM server to the tape loader, so it should not be an issue at the protected server?

Any ideas or suggestions welcome.

Thanks, /M

DPM 2012 R2 agent crashes instantly due to FileWriterHelperPlugin.DLL

Hi we have a DPM 2012 R2 4.2.1553.0 installation running on Windows Server 2012 R2 and on one server we are trying to backup all volumes.

They are all showing as "Replica is inconsistent" and when I look at the event log of the source machine which is running Server 2008 R2 there are event log items like this:

Fault bucket , type 0
Event Name: APPCRASH
Response: Not available
Cab Id: 0

Problem signature:
P1: DPMRA.exe
P2: 4.2.1553.0
P3: 57bade7a
P4: FileWriterHelperPlugin.DLL
P5: 4.2.1553.0
P6: 57bade78
P7: c0000005
P8: 000000000005c7c2
P9:
P10:

The source computer is also on 4.2.1553.0.

To try and resolve this I've completely uninstalled/rebooted/reinstalled the agent, but no good.

I've then removed the agent, the protection group and removed the saved data, gone into program files on the source and cleaned up any remaining files, removed antivirus, rebooted and set it up completely from scratch. This time I did not try to back up all volumes, but instead just a small folder. The appcrash happened again right away.

Both the DPM and source server are fully up to date with Microsoft Updates. There is only one DPM server on site.

Any idea what I can try next?

DPM 2016 File Server Backup SLOW

$

Hello,

My setup is DPM 2016 VM running on Server 2016 and Server 2016 H-V host.  The host also hold the storage VHDX files in storage spaces.

I can backup H-V VMs incredibly fast.  For instance, one protection group of ~20 servers @3TB of data finished in about 20 hours.  All of these VMs reside in my SAN (CSV connected)

Now I'm attempting to backup 2 large file servers.  1 is 2008 R2 physical  with about 1.3 TB of data that resides on the SAN (iscsi connected).  The second is a 2012 R2 VM but the data is also connected over iscsi to my SAN.  This is the same SAN that my VMs use.

The backup of the servers is PAINFULLY slow.  For instance, the 2012 R2 file server backup is 2 hours into it, and has backed up 6GB.  I've performed copy jobs between these servers and they all go much faster.  NOT blazingly fast, but average about 400 Mbps. -Edit- I should add that the copy job of SMALL files is about 400Mbps.  The copy of LARGE files is easily 800Mbps.  This is using Gb nics and during production hours (other contention is possible).  The point is, it behaves as expected, outside of DPM.

Any ideas?  With this performance, DPM is DOA.

Thx,

DML

DPM 2016 - Stuck on Calculating Disk Storage Allocation

DPM Server 2016 is running on a Windows 2016 Hyper V Host in a Windows 2016 Guest VM

Creating a new Protection Group consisting of partial volumes of a Windows 2008 R2 (physical server).  It's been stuck on Calculating Data Size on the "Review Disk Storage Allocation" screen of the Create New Protection Group wizard.  It does this every time I attempt it for that server needing protecting.  It never finishes. The total data size on disk is 1.2TB of a 1.4TB disk.

DPM 2016 File Server Disk Recovery not working if the file/folder names long

$

Dear Everybody,

I just migrated our backup infrastructure from DPM 2012 R2 to DPM 2016 and I found a very strange bug in file server recovery part.
In our file server (Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard) folder structure file/folder names are longer than 132 characters. In the previous DPM versions we didn't have any problem with this. But now when I trying to recover a file the recovery console cannot show/find these kind of objects. Some folders are empty.
I tested it with new folders/files and I see in the monitoring window the replica is created and the size of data is correct but in the recovery console the result is the same. If I reduce the filename size then everythings fine.

Is there anybody to help me where can I report this problem?

Best Regards,

Bela Vajda

Replica disk threshold exceeded DPM 2016

I recently transitioned from DPM 2012 to DPM 2016. I’m having a few odd problems. This is the one I’m working on right now. I’m protecting a file server with a lot of data on it. When I tried to protect the last, largest folder (360+ GB), it synced the data onto the DPM server but then came up as inconsistent. I tried several more times to check the consistency but it was never successful. Now it’s started giving me this error: “Replica disk threshold exceeded.” If I click the link to “Allocate more disk space for replica…”, it churns for several seconds, then comes up with this error: “DPM could not execute a WMI query. The query either returned an error or an empty result. (ID: 33507)” (BTW, the Windows Management Instrumentation service is running.) If I go to the Protection Group and choose “Modify Disk Allocation,” it appears to be wanting to increase the disk space on the protected computer that is used for storing the change journal. I’ve tried increasing that twice, from 300MB to 400MB to 500MB. It hasn’t made a difference so far. Should I keep increasing that?

I have terabytes of unused space in my disk pool, so I don't think that's the issue.

This is at least the third iteration of DPM I’ve used. I don’t recall running into this issue before. None of my searching has provided any help.

Any help or insight would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Rob

[DPM 2016] Replica Creation of Deduped Source Glacially Slow

$

I have a new DPM 2016 environment (running UR1 on Server 2016 Datacenter) that has an MBS pool running on 1TB VHDX files via Hyper-V passthrough. The setup has been working mostly well, except for with protecting a large, deduplicated datasource. The volume being backed-up is a 15TB disk with 6.4TB used (with a 50% dedup savings) on a Server 2012 R2 box. The replica creation is currently at 132 hours and has synchronized just shy of 500GB.

The DPMRACurr.errlog on the DPM 2016 server is comprised almost entirely of this line, repeated over and over:
26581D6C12/1515:25:56.71418fsutils.cpp(4064)353C7761-E6C5-45E9-BF38-0E1FEF47E30DWARNINGFailed: Hr: = [0x80070002] : Encountered Failure: : lVal : HRESULT_FROM_WIN32(dwError)

I have noticed on an occasion or two that the synchronization rate will skyrocket briefly, transferring large amounts of data before the speed drops back down. For reference on our DPM 2012 R2 environment this replica creation would have taken maybe a few days to complete.

Has anybody else seen anything like this in their environments?

how do you relocate snapshot storage area?

Windows Server 2008 R2

no this is not DPM issue but it is in this forum where i found VSS discussions. my issue concerns backing up (using NetBackup) my files in DFSR enabled drive. i am backing up NOT the drive but the DFSR volume, no users or opened files during backup yet i am having access denied for some VSS-related files. my searches (and suggestions from another forum) pointed me to this linkcan't open file: \System Volume Information

in that link, it suggested to "Changed the location of the snapshot storage area to a different drive or volume than the volume where the snapshot was taken." so the question is, how do you do that?

Missing/Hidden Files From Recovery Points on Restore GUI

$

0

I'm in the process of testing our backups in our File Protection Group on various folders and noticed some folders list all the contents in the original folder and some don't. We have DPM 2016 CU1.

In DPM -> Recovery Tab -> Select a data and time -> Drill down to the folder with the files. In the window that lists recoverable items, some folders will show all contents that are in the original folder and some will not. If I restore the entire folder that is missing the items, the items show up in the restored folder, just not in the DPM GUI. I checked about 75% of all the recovery points and they all had the same files listed with the same files missing.

Is this a bug or intended? If it's intended this way can I have a reason as to why?

DPM 2016 End User Recovery isn't working - DPM shares report "The device is not ready"

$

Hi all,

We're having issues getting End User Recovery working in DPM 2016 for our file servers.

  • The "Previous Versions" tab reports "There are no previous versions available"
  • The servers are backing up correctly, recovery points are being created and we can restore files using the DPM console
  • DPM is correctly populating AD with the ms-srvShareMapping records

The problem seems to be that the shares on the primary DPM server have been created but report "The device is not ready" when trying to access them.  Looking at the paths that have been shared they all start with \\?\ ie "\\?\C:\Program Files\Microsoft System Center 2016\DPM\DPM\Volumes\Replica\7a26ba55-0a79-4359-b9d1-025166e8e833\8365be07-32e3-4a96-b576-d90db3765e95\Full\Shared"

The path works if you drop the \\?\ from it.

We are using Modern Backup Storage (which is awesome!!)

Has anyone come across this? Has anyone get End User Recovery working with DPM 2016?  Thanks!

I am testing online backup functionality in DPM server 2012 R2.

DPM Azure backup failing

Hi,

I am hoping someone on here can help with a very frustrating problem.

I have a 5TB volume that has failed to create online recovery points to Azure Backup since 5th February. Local recovery points  to disk are completing without any issues 3 times a day.

I have 25 other volumes ranging between 1TB and 500MB that are creating online recovery points on a nightly basis without any problems.

The Online recovery point job runs for between 30 and 35 hours and can transfer between 95GB and 130GB then fails with the message "An unexpected error occurred while the job was running. (ID 104)" or "The Windows Azure Backup Agent cannot connect to the OBEngine service. (ID 100052)"

I have checked the available capacity on the local drives and there is still 300GB capacity free on the scratch drive.

I have tried deleting the files in this directory and let DPM recreate them, but the result is still the same.

I have also checked that we are running the latest Azure backup agent, and as of 15/03/16 we are (2.0.9028).

Has anyone experienced similar problems and successfully rectified them or have any ideas of how I can resolve this situation?

Using DPM 2012 R2, I get the error, "An unexpected error occurred while the job was running. (ID 104 Details: Unknown error (0x80110802) (0x80110802))" when running a consistency check for any virtual machine running that is running on a specific node of my Windows 2012 R2 Hyper-V cluster.  If I move the VM to another node, the job completes successfully.

Trouble with azure online protection

Hi,

I was trying to add online protection for our fileserver, when I ran into this error:

The backup operation failed because the maximum allowed data source size of 1700 GB was exceeded. (ID 100073)

The DPM server is running WS2016 and DPM 2016UR1 with Azure backup agent 2.0.9052.0. The server has been updated from DPM2012.

The fileserver is running WS2012R2 in a 2-node failover cluster.

According to this blog https://azure.microsoft.com/da-dk/blog/azure-backup-enables-backup-of-large-volumes-vms-databases-and-more/ the max data source size is 54400GB. The data source I was trying to backup was around 2000GB.

How can I add online protection for this data source?
