Hi,

We Used DPM 1807 to backup Data on Windows 10 Clients, but we faced an issue after format D drive on Windows Client, the format process change GUID for the Volume, so DPM was unable to detect the correct GUID, we use a workaround but for windows 7 to change GUID and match it with the old one that DPM needs in order to backup from registry but unfortunately this not help anymore to windows 10

any help plz

Protection Group with error

$

Hi everybody, i have this problem with a Protection group on DPM 2012 (Windows Server 2008):

  • The server has atacched a storage of 5 TB trough iSCSI connection.
  • The protection group is of a File Server (Hyper-V VM)
  • We want to migrate the DPM to 2016 version, so installed a new Server with DPM 2016 and Windows Server 2016.
  • When we tried to migrate de PG to the new server, only disconnect the iSCSI connection and connect on the 2016. Everything was OK, but the storage was not visible to DPM (i understand that it is because must have a REFS format)
  • Resuming, we back again to connect the storage to the original server, and in the console, the PG show the protection status "Replica is inconsistent"

Disk status is ok:

When tried a Consistency check, the error is:

"Operation failed for F:\ on VLACR-FS00.latam.com because the recovery point volume for this data source is not available on the DPM server. Future backups will also fail until this issue is fixed. (ID 30076 Details: Unspecified error (0x80004005))"

The sincronizartion show this error: "The replica of Volume F:\ on VLACR-FS00.latam.com is not consistent with the protected data source. DPM error ID = 30076. (ID 33123)"

And the recovery point show: "The replica of Volume F:\ on VLACR-FS00.latam.com is not consistent with the protected data source. DPM error ID = 30076. (ID 33123)"

We could remove the Protection group, but the idea is not lose the retention of 30 days. The backups was every OK after the tasks.

Tried with chkdsk mentioned on this link: https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/62f3331e-db91-4d32-978d-940d118eb7a5/dpm-2007-the-recovery-point-volume-is-not-available?forum=dataprotectionmanager

No errors was founds.

Some idea, please?

Regards.

Hello,

Can anyone give me examples of the following which DPM does not support:

Files with any of the following combinations of attributes:

  • Encryption and reparse
  • Encryption and Single Instance Storage (SIS)
  • Encryption and case-sensitivity
  • Encryption and sparse
  • Case-sensitivity and SIS
  • Compression and SIS

My backup data includes encrypted exchange mail and possibly other encrypted data which i am not sure falls in the above category.

Thanks.

Protecting Server to Server Storage Replication

$

I have (2) file servers setup with storage replication enabled, the source server is the owner of the replicated disk and the destination server does not present the disk. I have a protection group in DPM (2016) with both servers, however backups of the replicated disk can only be done on the source server. The problem becomes when you failover and change the source and destination servers, backups then fail on the destination (old source) and start on the new source. It looks as if there will be a lot of duplicate data being backup and possibly problems with disjoined data on the DPM server.

Any suggestions on how best to backup file servers in this scenario?

Thank you.

Replica Sync fails

Hello,

Every time a replica sync runs on a volume backup on a file server I get the error:

DPM could not log files that were skipped during backup to \\?\Volume{xxxxxxxxxxx}\xxxxxx\FailedFiles.dat (ID 32577 Details: )

I’ve tried the suggested fix here: https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/f7de60cd-841f-4d22-862e-aaf3723717c7/dpm-could-not-log-files-that-were-skipped-during-backup-to-volumexxxxxfailedfilesdat-id?forum=dataprotectionmanager and I get the error: The parameter is incorrect. When trying to mount the replica volume.

Any ideas how to get the replica sync working again?

Thanks,

J

DPM Protection for Files/Shares

Hi,

We want to configure protection for file share. However, this share is created on EMC Data domain and is accessible using \\server\share.

I know that for file backups we need to installed agent on machines and then register that machines with DPM. However, since this is just a share, can we take backup of this using DPM ?

Unique schedules for different directories or different protection groups for one disk

Hi,

There is a file server, with disk D. It has different directories: d:\ Folder1, d:\ Folder2, d:\ Foldre3. Directories has different size and importance. I need different schedule for each of them.
Is it really impossible to create a separate security group in DPM with its own schedule, for each directory on one partition. I can not create another (custom) protection group for d:\ folder01, because d:\ Folder01, d:\ Folder02 are in one of the protection groups.
«Other items on the datasource are a member of another protection group»

Or can not do, a unique schedule for each directory in one protection group.
In general, all the directories are very large and I do not need to perform a backup of ALL, every day, but only Folder01. Folder02 and Folder03 I want back up every week.

Tell me maybe I'm wrong :)

Thanks.

DPM 2012 R2 Can't drill down into one folder to restore a file

Hi

Running DPM 2012 R2 R13

The protection group is backing up a single local folder D:\Share on a 2012 R2 Server.  The file structure looks like the following

Share

    folder1

    folder2

    folder3

    folder4

Trying to restore from within the console, I can't see the contents of d:\share\folder3.  All the other folders I can.

No error messages.

I saw someone else had a similar issue and theirs was caused by a file corruption.  I have run a chkdk and the volume did not have any errors.

How do see the files to restore one from within folder3?

Cannot access path C:\ error after extending System Reserved Partition

$

I have a Windows Server 2008 R2 Web server that Barebones protection continued to fail because the System Reserved partition was only 100mb and did not have space to back up.  I used EaseUS to extend move the primary OS partition over 150mbs so I could extend the System Reserved partition.  This all went over without a hitch.  Now when I try to create a new Protected Group for the C drive of that server, I get Cannot Access Path C:\ because part of the path has been deleted or renamed.

Can someone tell me how to get this issue corrected with DPM 2016

Thanks,

Issue with DPM 2016 and backing up shadow copies

Hi there

We have a issue with one server that is failing to back up/sync due to it claiming a file within a shadow copy is in use.

Since Thursday, 14 September 2017 12:57:55 PM, synchronization jobs for D:\ on "servername". The total number of failed jobs = 7. The last job failed for the following reason: (ID 3115)

DPM encountered an error while performing an operation for \\?\GLOBALROOT\Device\HarddiskVolumeShadowCopy5889\Apps\PC Apps\ on "servername" (ID 2033 Details: The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process (0x80070020))

I have ran process explorer and I could not find anything that was trying to continually

access anything in that above location.

Restarted the dpm server and the server that is failing backup and tried again with no luck.

Ive checked the dpmracurr.errlog but im not really sure what to look for.

Any hints or tips? This is one of our domain controllers!

Thanks

Multiple protection groups for a single datasource

Dear ,

i have DPM2016 with rollup2. i have a server where where all the shared files are putting there. on this server i've mapped a 76 TB from a dell storage.the shared folders on this partition have a size of 3.5 TB. i created a protection group to backup these shared files.in parallel i am running backup exec to have a double copy. after a recovery point the protection group start a consistency check. the consistency check is taking around 38 hours to be done. the protection group gives me a green ok after that a recovery point occur according to the schedule and then a consistency check and so on.

my question is can i create multiple protection groups for the same data source (for example D drive). other question why is this happening why every time the protection group run a consistency check.

Options when removing Online protection - HELP!

$

Documentation around DPM and Azure online protection seems scant to say the least so I'm hoping somebody can help me.

I have a file server which I'm protecting to disk and then Azure for longer term. Using DPM201R2 UR13. All agents and Azure Agents up to date.

The volume I'm protecting is about 2.8TB and is now taking an age to complete teh online recovery point. in Fact most of them are not managing to complete becauase they are taking so long the operation has to be cancelled due to requirement to run updates or some such. When allowed to complete they are taking over 100 hours.

Now I have had to recreate the protection of this volume at least twice in the past due to some corruption issues on the DPM disk staging and because of some restructuring of the protected data. Each time I have to do this I opt to remove the disk protection, but retain the Online protection (because I really don't want to lose my online backups of this data source). Then reprotect the volume.

Disk based protection always works fine, but I have a suspicion now that when I'm creating an on-line recovery point it is now creating it against the current but also previous 'incarnations' of my online backups - which is why it takes so long.

My reason for this suspicion is that I can see in resource monitor that the CBengine process scans through the whole volume multiple times in creating the online recovery point . And also by total storage in Azure has increased significantly each time.

So my question is - if I find myself in a similar situation whereby I find I have to recreate protection for a group, server, or volume - what option should i use to ensure I keep my online protection , but 're-attach' the recreated protection to the existing online recovery points?

Secondly - if what I suspect above is true - how can i Fix this mess and get by online recovery points backup to speed again?

DPM 2016 Secondary Backup Server crashing at protection group

$

Good Morning all,

I am currently doing some work on DPM 2016 trying to create protection groups on back up server, however it crashes everytime I get to "review disk storage allocation". I created the disks into volumes to be compatiable so I know that it has enough space required but it keeps crashing at that spot. Is there any work around or fix atm?

What exactly is the purpose of Synchronization Frequency?

$

After I read "What is Synchronization Frequency " here: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb809047.aspx, and "What is a recovery point" here:http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb809164.aspx, I still have some doubts in what exactly  Synchronization Frequency's purpose is, if it can't be used to recover data.  Let me ask my question by using the following example.

Say in a file protection group I setup 3 recovery points in a day, at 9AM, 12PM, and 3PM.  And I setup my Synchronization Frequency as "every 1 hour".  Below is what happens at each hour, in the morning:

8AM: synchronization
9AM: *recovery point
10AM: synchronization
11AM: synchronization
12PM: *recovery point

So my questions are:

Q1. What are the synchronizations taken place at 10AM and 11AM for?  Are they simply making the recovery point creation at 12PM to complete quicker, becuase DPM server only need to sync changes in an hour (between 11 and 12), instead of in 3 hours (between 9 and 12, if no synchronization was configured between each recovery point) ?

Q2. I read from the article that at each synchronization, changes are transferred to DPM server and thenapplied to the replica.  However, it did not create a recovery point.

So, what would be the difference difference if I chose 15 minutes orJust before a recovery point, as my Synchronization Frequency interval?   I mean by doing sync's more frequently, I am still getting only 3 recovery points in a day.  Then why do I want to sync it more frequently?   If my server crashed at 9:50, but the synchronization took place at 9:45 is not a recovery point and can't be used to recover data, why would I want to sync it every 15 minutes?

New physical DPM host and migration plan

$

Hi guys, posting to get some input from some DPM experts here with regards to my rebuild and migration plan

Our current set up is as follows:

  • Primary, Physical host, DAS, DPM 2016, Windows Server 2012R2
  • Secondary, Physical host, DAS, DPM 2016, Windows Server 2012R2

We are looking to replace this set up with a new physical host running DPM 2019 on Windows Server 2019 as our primary and utilise Azure Backup getting rid of the secondary.

Question: As it is not possible to bring over the existing storage pool to the new host, is there any benefit in retaining and upgrading the existing DPM database as opposed to starting with a fresh new one? I am not worried about having to reconfigure protection groups.

The plan is to build the new primary and have it ready. Then migrate protection of selected protected servers over to the new DPM and into Azure by way of the following steps:

  1. Stop protection in existing DPM (keeping replica on disk)
  2. SetDPMServer.exe -dpmservername $newdpmserver on protected server
  3. Attach-ProductionServer.ps1 on new DPM console
  4. Upgrade agent on protected server from new DPM console
  5. Wait for replica rebuild on new storage pool
  6. Wait for full sync to Azure Backup

Our internet bandwidth is limited to 500mbps (realistically can only probably use 200) and it would take days to seed our 20TB up to Azure. My thought process is that keeping both environments live and staggering the migration will minimise the risk of not having a off site back up.

Keen to get any input - thanks.

Using DPM 2019, I get the error, "An unexpected error occurred while the job was running. (ID 104 Details: Unspecified error (0x80004005))" This error only occurs on one VM that we're trying to backup to tape, all the other VMs succeed. I have tried the following Answer down below of removing "NullProviderInstalled"=dword:00000001 in regedit, but this fails to work for us.

Fileserver Protection

We are just getting DPM setup for the first time, and I added my first PG being our filecluster. The system looks to backup the main volume the first time just fine, but then after the initial replica creation and recovery point is made each following sync fails. I run a consistency check and everything looks good again till the next sync and it fails again.

Being new to this system I'm not really sure where to start troubleshooting this. The short term storage we have setup is a 1tb volume and currently we're backing up 350 gigs of data. The PG is set to sync every 15 minutes while retaining these for 5 days.

Any direction anybody can point me would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Volume backup fails with system cannot find the path specified error

$

Hi.

Another DPM error. We're backing up several volumes of a server, but the backup fails with the following error:

DPM encountered an error while performing an operation for \\?\Volume{d5aa411e-0924-11e5-80b5-44a842037726}\Folder\Folder1\Folder2\Folder3\Folder4\ on <server_FQDN> (ID 2033 Details: The system cannot find the path specified (0x80070003)). (actual folder names replaced with 'FolderX').

This is not an uncommon error, but we can usually solve it by running a CC job or in extreme cases deleting the backups and recreating them.

This time, nothing works:

 - the error is always reporting the same path

 - the path exists, contains files and has correct/standard NTFS permissions and is normally accessible

 - the disk has no apparent issues (scanned by chkdsk)

 - there are other disks (volumes) being backed up on the same server, those are backed up successfully

I've tried:

 - rerunning the backup jobs

 - CC jobs

 - deleting the backup and recreate from scratch - this fails with the same error and we're now with no backup, since the job always fails

 - restarting DPM agent on the protected server

 - cleaning temp folder of the DPM agent

 - checking VSS writers - all fine

Any ideas how to fix this or troubleshoot further?

Btw the volume GUID reported in the error doesn't match the volume that is being backed up - I assume the ID is of the shadow copy volume that exists only during the duration of the backup job?
