DPM 2012 and corrupted files or folders

$

I'v noticed that DPM 2012 protection job will stop backing up if one file or folder is corrupted. Why is that DPM will not continue backing other data? is there a way to configure it, which it will just bypass the corrupted file or folder and go on backing up?

Here is the error message :

The Operation failed since DPM was unable to access the file/folder \\?\Volume{9762dc47-54e7-11dd-bd38-00215a506db1}\path/filename on  ServerName. This could be due to the file/folder being corrupt or the file system on the volume being corrupt. (ID 2036 Details: The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable (0x80070570))

It was a powerpoint file that's it says it was corrupted but I am able to open and work on the that file OK.

Thanks

What happens when deleting folders from target during restore?

What happens if I e.g. restore E:\USERS\B and then I delete the folder B whilst restoring. What happens then if the restore is not yet complete? Will the restore fail or will it just recreate the target folder B and continue restore with the rest of the not restored files?

I would also like to know how DPM 2012 R2 restores? Does it restore per folder alphabetically, or does it restore randomly? Does it restore some files in E:\USERS\C\V   and then in E:\USERS\E\X and then after that suddenly back in E:\USERS\C\Z?

Error: "DPM Could not back up some of the required files" - 0x80070005

In the last few days, I've started getting errors in DPM on my 'data files' protection group.  The error reads:

DPM could not back up some of the required files for this data source. This could be caused by intermittent failures, or by a file type that is unsupported. If this backup is for a deduplicated volume, then some or all of the deduplicated files might not be recoverable from this recovery point.
Number of files that failed to synchronize: 8
During the next synchronization, DPM will try to back up these files again. (ID 32526)

When I view the failed files log, each file shows an error code of 0x80070005.  The first time I saw this error, only one file was listed as failed, but subsequent times the number of failed files has increased.

The server that these files are located on is running Server 2012R2, and the data volume is configured for deduplication.  The server was just installed a few weeks ago as a replacement for an existing file server.

Any suggestions on what might cause this?

We have been protecting a volume on an Untrusted computer for a couple years now. The volume on that computer filled up and we added another set of drives and made a new volume. I can't get that volume (or the existing C drive) to show up when I try to add it to the Protection Group.

Azure Online Backup id 104 error after DPM UR5 update

This is the second weekend in a row with an error after initial Azure Online backup completed where this error "An unexpected error occurred while the job was running. (ID 104)" happens on a File Server that is 2008 R2.

DPM server is 2012 OS with DPM 2012 R2 UR5.

All other Azure online backups complete successfully. Mostly SQL database backups.

There is one VMM 2012 separate Azure online backup that is using a different vault and it is successful too.

When this error happens it seems to stall on the backup and then time-out, but its hard to figure out.

All I know is that it stops at the same time on Sunday at 2pm then restarts the job an hour later and never finishes.

Just started using Azure online backup after DPM UR5 with the File Server.  Its ~400GB in size with many files.

Can anyone point me to a way to troubleshoot this?  I did not want to configure other server backups until I can get this one resolved.

Thanks,

Denise

DPM Error

Hello,

We are protecting our clustered file server with DPM. Everything works fine but some times approximately once per month we getting error for synchronization job:

A journal wrap error has occurred on the change journal, and therefore DPM is unable to track any more changes or may have missed some changes for the data source E:\ on server1.server2.domain.com (ID 30117 Details: Internal error code: 0x809909D1). After that my replica becomes inconsistent and long verification process should be started.

Have found some articles i.e. Link1  about, but it is not still fully clear for me. Can someone explain in little bit more details what does this error mean and what can be the reason.

Thank you in advance.

Restoring files with DPM 2012 R2 Cu5 installed

Ok maybe this has already been answered but I am not finding anything on this and maybe I am just searching for the wrong things. But we are using DPM 2012 R2 with CU5 installed to take backups of our server 2008 R2 and 2012 R2 servers. We have also decided to go with Windows Azure for offsite backups. The Questions I have is this. Now when my backups are created with DPM 2012 r2 I believe what it is doing when running the create recovery point job that it is putting a local backup on our SAN where I have DPM pointed to for the local backup and then from their is uploading the files to AZURE as the jobs finish the local copy? If this is true then when I go to recover a file in DPM why can I not choose to recover from a local disk copy and it defaults to the online copy? It would make my restores go so much fast if it would give me a choice to restore from the local copy VS the online copy. Did I just miss something maybe? I have DPM setup to keep local backups for 14 days. and the cloud backups longer.

Thank you for any advice or assistance in advance :)

Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,

we have a DPM 2012 R2 running on Windows Server 2012 R2 (fully patched)

After making a new protection group which should backup F:\data the protection status is "Replica is inconsistent"

In Monitoring -> Critical    I face the following error:

Unsued Replica Volume deletion?

Hello Guy's,

i had the following problem: On a Server we have drive f: wich is backed up by DPM.

The Disk for drive f: was exchange with anotherone (Its a iSCSI device).
After that the DPW 2012 R2 Backup for drive F failed (unabled to configure protection). Caused by the change of the drive ID i guess.
So i removed an readded F: in the DPM Server Console and the Backup seems to work again. So far so good.

But now Back to my question: The Replica Volume for drive f: is consuming arround 7 TB, so thats a big chunk of DATA.

Will the old Replica Volumen of F: be deleted automaticly (after the Backups expire) or do i have to remove it manualy ?

thanks for any Help,

regards

Stefan

Hi,

we are getting an error with the DPM server, the disk is on the same server, other disk have no issues

The replica of Volume H:\ on backup.domain.eu is inconsistent with the protected data source. All protection activities for data source will fail until the replica is synchronized with consistency check. You can recover data from existing recovery points, but new recovery points cannot be created until the replica is consistent.

DPM encountered an error while performing an operation for \\?\Volume{5d0ecad1-5d88-47eb-8a5c-13dddaf0d41e}\app\invoice\ on backup.domain.eu (ID 2033 Details: The system cannot find the path specified (0x80070003))

we did a consistency check twice and a disk scan, even deleted the backup and recreated it

Online recovery points cannot be created for specific text and url files

Hello, My DPM 2012 R2 Server (version 4.2.1254.0) is giving me Error ID 33415 when attempting to create online recovery points for a few files. All other files backed up from the same sources are not affected. The files are inevitably .txt or .url files. This is not a new error, but given the nature of the few files and their quantity I have ignored it for a while. I do notice that the number of failed files has grown from 2 to 6 over 6 months. Disk based recovery points do show these files as being backed up and do not give the error.

The failed files log shows  "DATA FAILURE" 0x8007000d". The text of the error is below.

The servers being backed up are 2012 R2 VMs on Hyper-V 2012 R2.

Description:    DPM could not create online recovery point for some of the required files for this data source. This could be because of intermittent failures or if the file type is unsupported.

Number of files that failed during online recovery point creation: 5
Online recovery point creation job will try to backup these files next time. (ID 33415)

Does anyone know what could cause this?

Thanks!

Dedup File System to secondary DPM

Like written here:

http://blogs.technet.com/b/dpm/archive/2013/04/29/sc-2012-sp1-dpm-efficient-protection-of-windows-2012-dedup-volume.aspx

it is not possible to protect a dedup Volume with a Secondary SCDPM.

Is there any furute Plans to support/add this Feature, cause this is a huge Reason to stop some Projects for our customers.

We ar planning SCDPM Scenarios with 3 SCDPM in a row, and a lot of deduped File Servers.

DPM Secondary Server Failure

$

Hello,

We've had an issue with our secondary DPM server where a planned update to SCDPM (from 2012 to 2012R2) caused some of the protected clients to not successfully create replicas. At this point I decided to restore the database which seemed like a good idea at the time as the backups were working, right up until they stopped working.

After restoring the database, none of the issues were solved and I had gained a new problem -- I could no longer edit the protection groups on the secondary server at all.

At this point I was stuck. I couldn't get the backups to run, and I couldn't edit anything on the server to make it work. I was left with one option as far as I or Google could see -- Blow the Secondary server away and start from scratch. The secondary is only used as a DR option, so this wasn't a big deal. I removed the agent from the Primary server, uninstalled DPM from the Secondary and deleted the database. I then installed DPM2012 R2 fresh, installed the agent on the Primary from the Secondary and created a new protection group.

And herein lies the problem: I cannot see the node for "Protected Servers" listed underneath the Primary server.

Now, I know there can be all sorts of drama's related to moving protected servers around in a Primary-Secondary scenario as DPM databases tend to hold onto information. However everything I've read so far would indicate that the issue would lie on the DB of the Secondary server, which I've completely blown away and as such shouldn't be a problem.

I have noticed that the Primary server maintains the Server ID of the Secondary server, even after it was uninstalled and removed from the environment, under the tbl_AM_Server table of it's database. I'd have thought that this should be removed upon removing the agent from the server, however it is still there. Can I manually delete this row from the database, and reinstall the agent to try and force it onto a new (and potentially correct) ID?
I've also noticed that when I install the agent onto the Primary (from the Secondary), the DPMServerID of the Primary server, as listed in the database on the Primary, does not change to point to the Secondary -- is this expected behavior?
If I do a dance from within the database and point the DPMServerID field of the two servers to each other, I can then expand the node from within the Secondary and the Primary will list the "Protected Servers" node, showing the Secondary Server. Obviously that's not what I want, as I don't want to back the Secondary up to itself, but it does show that the group can be displayed, and may be related to the Primary not believing that it has any protected servers to back up. Is there a table or a field in the DB that lists secondary servers for protection points, or any other reason why the Primary would believe that there are no valid servers for the Secondary to look after?

Now, i thought maybe I'm missing some files or folders, so I've verified the folder and service permissions as being correct. The MTATEMP$\PSInfo folder was missing from the Primary server, so I recreated it copying the settings from the Secondary. Still no change in behavior.

I also get an enumeration error on a share when the Secondary expands to the Primary from within the protection group. Not sure if this is related? It's been happening from before the server died, so I'm thinking not.

Any suggestions on what I can look at would be greatly appreciated. It's pretty awful that we have a product that allows itself to get into this position. I know what we have done isn't exactly a "Supported Scenario", but I wouldn't have expected this much trouble.

Thanks,

Nick.

Client Agent Management

Hi All,

I do have a current environment of Domain Controller 2008 with forest functional Level Server 2003 and DPM 2012 R2. Now I have configured my DPM to take Backup of my client machine which do have Windows 8.1 as a client OS. The problem is, my client machine do have 2 IP's one for the LAN connection and another for Wireless Connection with same network. when I push the agent from DPM Server, if the client machine is on LAN or wireless it will get configured. but if i switch from LAN to Wireless or Wireless to LAN, it says disconnected client.

Is there any solution to reduce it?

Thanks.

Hello -

I'm trying to back up a file server, it a Windows 2008 R2 OS and it's a file server only.

I'm simply trying to back up the one partition which is labeled as D:\ .

When I run the backup, it has failed over the last week and it gives the error message below:

Operation failed for D:\on EGVDPMServer01 due to VSS error on the DPM server. Future backups are also likely to fail until the issue is fixed. (ID 30078 Details: Unknown error (0xd000000d) (0xD000000D)).

EGVDPMServer01 is the actual backup server, it's not the file server.

The file server is called epcfile01 but the failure is being reported on the DPM server which is "EGVDPMServer01".

Thanks

Tech Guy

Secondary DPM (2012 R2) Issues: synchronising too much data from Primary DPM, persistant consistancy checks, and no dedup support!

$

I have a Primary DPM server that is protecting various File servers and a Exchange DAG. Everything is working as it should on this server, but I am experiencing constant issues on the secondary DPM protecting these same data sources.

On the primary, two Protection Groups in particular are set up to protect two different volumes on the same file server. Volume D:\ is 46TB in size, with a deduplicated file size of 22TB (actual 39TB) whilst Volume E:\ is 25 TB in size, with a deduplicated file size of 2.5TB (actual 5.5TB).

Issue 1:

As expected Volume D: was initially replicated to the secondary DPM server at its undeduplicated size ( 39TB), as was Volume E:\ with initial replication to the secondary of 5.5 TB.  So when is Microsoft going to support dedup on a secondary DPM ? It seems daft to support dedup on the Primary DPM which is always more likely to be close to the original datasources on the  LAN and not on the secondary DPM which is most likely to be placed offsite on a WAN !

Issue 2:

I have a big issue with the subsequent Synchronizations on the secondary server for E: which seems to transfer almost the full 5.5 TB every day ( I have it set to sync every 24hrs) - although the data is fairly static (i.e.unchanging) on that volume. On one occasion a Sync continued for over 48 hours for this volume and had transferred over 20GB (according to the DPM console) , until I manually cancelled the job - how is that possible on a volume with only 5.5 TB (UN-deduplicated) ?? What is going on here - has anyone any ideas?

Issue 3:

Another File server I am protecting on both the Primary & Secondary DPM server - always fails over to a consistency check on the secondary server - usually due to the fact it cannot access a particular file which results in an inconsistent replica . However the Sync (and subsequent restore point) on the primary DPM server from the original datasource is always completes without any issues. Again, has anyone any clues ?

I do get the impression that the whole Secondary DPM thing is not quite robust enough. I can only assume that as the Primary seems to protect the original datasources ok, that the issue is with the secondary reading the information on the primary DPM.

DPM encountered an error while reading from the recovery point used for recovery.

Hi Guys I'm getting this error:

DPM encountered an error while reading from the recovery point used for recovery. Either the recovery point no longer exists or, if you selected a share for recovery, the path to its contents is missing from the recovery point.  (265)

The DPM Server is on Windows 2012 DPM is 2012R2 4.2.1273.0

The Server being backed up is 2012 R2 with DPM Agent 4.2.1273.0

The Server has 3 Data Volumes (C: Drive) and D and E its the D and E drive that i get this error if i try and recover data from DPM.  the C Drive is fine.  the D and E Drive are different in that 1 De-dupe is enabled and 2 the Shadow Copies for these Volumes are stored on separate Disks F and G respectively.

I've removed the Protection from drives D and E and reinstated it but every recovery point created brings up the same error message. I'm not sure where to go next do I need to Protect the Disks that have the Shadow copies on also? Many thanks in advance Gordon.

Data Protection Manager 2012 - Inconsistent when backing up Deduplicated File Server

Protected Server

  • Server 2012 File Server with Deduplication running on Data drive

DPM Server

  • Server 2012
  • Data Protection Manager 2012 Service Pack 1

We just recently upgraded our DPM server from DPM 2010 to DPM 2012 primarily because it is supposed to support Data Deduplication. Our primary File server that holds our home directories etc. is limited on space and was quickly running low so just after we got DPM 2012 in place we optimized the drive on the file server which compressed the data about 50%. Unfortunately shortly after enabling deduplication the protected shares on the deduplicated volume are getting a Replica is Inconsistent error.

I continually get Replica is Inconsistent for the Server that has deduplication running on it. All of the other protected servers are being protected as they should be. I have run a consistency check multiple times probably about 10 times and it keeps going back to Replica is inconsistent. The replica volume shows that it is using 3.5 TB and the Actual protect volume is 4TB in size and has about 2.5 TB of data on it with Deduplication enabled.

This is the details of the error

Affected area:   G:\

Occurred since:1/12/2015 4:55:14 PM

Description:        The replica of Volume G:\ on E****.net is inconsistent with the protected data source. All protection activities for data source will fail until the replica is synchronized with consistency check. You can recover data from existing recovery points, but new recovery points cannot be created until the replica is consistent.

For SharePoint farm, recovery points will continue getting created with the databases that are consistent. To backup inconsistent databases, run a consistency check on the farm. (ID 3106)

Steps taken to resolve - I’ve spent some time doing some searches and haven’t found any solutions to what I am seeing. I have the data deduplication role installed on the DPM server which has been the solution for many people seeing similar issues. I have also removed that role and the added it back. I have also removed the protected server and added it back to the protection group. It synchronizes and says consistent then after a few hours it goes back to inconsistent. When I go to recovery it shows that I have recovery points and it appears that I can restore but because the data is inconstant I don’t feel I can trust the data in the recovery points. Both the protected server and the DPM servers’ updates are managed via a WSUS server on our network.

You may suggest I just un-optimize the drive on the protected server however after I have optimized the drive it takes a large amount more of space to un-optimize it (Anyone know why that is) anyways the drive isn’t large enough to support un-optimization.

If anyone has any suggestions I would appreciate any help. Thanks in advanced.

How to calculate the size of data source

$

I have a DPM environment where only tape library is configured to storage backup. No disk storage pool.

I create a protection group to protect a lot of data source, including files and databases.

I know I can found the size of data source in "Modify Disk Allocation" if there is a storage pool. However, if no storage pool is configured, "Modify Disk Allocation" is disabled.

So, my question is how to calculate the total size of these data source in DPM in the environment?

Thank you in advance!
