Single File Recovery

I have just finished installing DPM 2012 on a Windows Server 2012 System.  I have run several days of short term disk backups of our file system.  I am trying to verify the backup data by recovering some folder from inside the one of the  drives but is seems that it will now let me see sub folders. Only the drive letter.  I have tried drilling down into the drives by to no avail.  When I right click on the drive the only option that I get is to recover or show all recovery points.

I was using DPM 2010 until that server died and I know i could do it in the last version.

Please help

Thanks,

DPM 2012 R2 Online Protection - Online Recovery Point Creation Failed

Hi

We are moving from protecting our DPM server with another server to use an Azure Data Vault.  2 of the Protection Groups work fine, but the third - protecting a pair of Folders - fails.  On the DPM MMC it shows Online recovery point creation failed, and in the Event Log it shows -

Creation of online recovery points for D:\ on blah.blah.co.uk have failed. The last online recovery point creation failed for the following reason: (ID: 3188)

The operation attempted cannot be performed at this time because a backup or restore operation is currently running. (ID: 100049)

The DPM server is the only one conducting any backups.  The target server is Win 2003 (for the moment).

Could anyone give me any pointers?

Thanks

DPM 2012 File server dedup volume backup problem

$

Hi all,

We have a DPM 2012 R2 server (version: 4.2.1273.0) installed on a Windows Server 2012 Standard (not R2). We try to backup our virtual file server which is also a Windows Server 2012 Standard (not R2).

This file server has a local C: and D: drive and an E: drive connected from SAN with Windows deduplication turned on.

We can backup everything on this server (System State, Bare metal, C: and D: drives) except the E: drive.

The problem is, when we create a protection group and add this server to it, the first replica is successful for all components (even E: drive) but the following synchronizations failing for the deduplicated E: drive. If i run a consistency check, it seems it’s backing up, because ont he Monitoring tab I can see that there is a data transfer. But it always ends up with replica inconsistent.

I have this alert in DPM console:

DESCRIPTION:

The replica of Volume E:\ on FILESERVER.COMPANY.LOCAL is inconsistent with the protected data source. All protection activities for data source will fail until the replica is synchronized with consistency check. You can recover data from existing recovery points, but new recovery points cannot be created until the replica is consistent.

For SharePoint farm, recovery points will continue getting created with the databases that are consistent. To backup inconsistent databases, run a consistency check on the farm. (ID 3106)

RECOMMENDED ACTION:

Review the failure errors for individual files from the log file \\?\Volume{ebad65e7-fcf2-13e4-962d-001ec9ee5638}\e3866ced-d582-263a-a326-a6aabdc8f361\FailedFilesLog.txt and take appropriate action. If some files fail consistently, you can exclude the folders containing these files by modifying the protection group or moving the files to another location.

I’ve tried to access FailedFilesLog.txt but I got „Access Denied” error. I’ve tried to open it by mounting the volume. I was able to browse the System Volume Information, but when I try to navigate into the replica folder the comes the „Access Denied” error message. (I ran command prompt as an administrator)

Thanks for any help.

Kind regards,

Dvijne

DPM2012SP1 cannot read files/folders on the protected server

$

Hi.

DPM2012SP1 protecting a C: drive (file protection) of a WS2008R2 server. This always fails (including the first synchronization after configuring the protection) with the following error:

"DPM encountered an error while performing an operation for \\?\Volume{d20bd38d-7495-11df-938b-806e6f6e6963}\<path_to_a_folder>\ on <dpmserver.domain.local> (ID 2033 Details: The system cannot find the path specified (0x80070003))"

The folder it refers to exists on the server and contains about 13k XML files and I can browse it and read the files.

Why is DPM failing to back it up? There's no event in the protected server's eventlog (as if the backup wasn't even started).

When I try a consistency check from DPM, it will run for a bit, transfer 16.4MB, then fail/stop. I've also tried (at least 5 times) to stop the protection (and delete the replica) and reconfigure it from scratch, but it doesn't help.

There's also a BMR protection configured for this server and that runs fine.

New disks on Protected members

We've got 30 physical servers protected by DPM.

We are about migrate to a new 3PAR.

This means that existing servers (not the DPM-servers themselves of course) will have both their bootdisk as well as their data-disks copied to a new LUN, provisioned from the new storage.

Since DPM use change block tracking, Im guessing that a datamigration plan using robocopy will cause all the files to be treated as new, causing the recoverypoints to be maxed out beyond our resources.

Any ideas how we can copy files to new disks and keep the journaling?

Actually, this USB flash drive could be detected by my computer. But, when I tried to open it, a “not formatted error” message popped out. The “properties” of this drive was also displayed as “RAW”. So, how could I access my inner data and fix this “RAW” problem? Please help me fix this!

DPM 2012R2 Online Backup Error -- ID 3188 and 34504

Hi,

We're currently running DPM 2012R2 on a Server 2012R2 server. We're using Azure online backups as an alternative to our weekly tape archive. This was set up and has been running mostly fine for the past month or two.

Recently I installed the latest rollup update (to build 4.2.13120) to allow our data server to backup to the cloud (our primary data server has a 1TB disk that was previously blocked by the 850GB limit). Since installing the update package, my second data server has not been able to complete an online backup and errors with the following:

"Online recovery point creation jobs for <Volume> on <Server> have failed 1 times. (ID 3188)
Backup has encountered an irrecoverable error. (ID 34504)"

Looking at the event log on the DPM server I can see the following error:

"Creation of online recovery points for <Volume> on <Server> have failed. The last online recovery point creation failed for the following reason: (ID: 3188)
The current operation failed due to an internal service error [0x7E3]. Please retry the operation after sometime. (ID: 100066)"

I can't seem to find much in the way of useful information for the cause or source for any of the above listed error codes. I've been attempting to run this backup for over a week, so it does not appear to be a transient error. The volumes that are in error are Deduped volumes on their host server (Server 2012 R2 server), although I haven't had any issues before this with creating replicas and recovery points on the local DPM server.

Hoping that someone out there can shed some light on the error codes and point me in a direction for solving this.

Thanks,

Nick.

DPM 2012R2 - Backing up Drive that's Volume Name (Guid) changes

$

We are in the process of migrating backups to DPM 2012 R2 and have an unforseen issue.

We have a volume mounted on a server that we used to back up by driver letter on our legacy software but in DPM this does not work as the Volume GUID under this drive letter changes each month (it is a snapshot from a SAN that is mounted automatically before the backup so the most recent is always backed up to tape).

As DPM uses these to track its backups it simply thinks the drive is not there once the underlying GUID changes.

Is there a way round this? Or anything worth trying?

DPM 2012R2 Backup to Azure for drives larger than 825GB

Hi,

I am currently having an issue whereby I cannot get our primary data server to create an online backup to Azure. We're currently running the latest version of DPM (4.2.1312.0) and the agents have been updated accordingly (the data server has the most current agent, and I've downloaded and installed the most current Azure agent from the portal -- 2.0.8707.0).

What I've done:

  • Removed and re-added the server to the protection group in DPM
  • Bounced both servers a number of times
  • Re-registered the DPM server to Azure
  • Fully patched the DPM server

Local recovery points work fine from the host server to DPM, but all attempts to kick off the DPM-->Azure backup will ultimately result in the following:

Description:Online recovery point creation jobs for <Volume> on <Server> have failed 1 times. (ID 3188)
The backup operation failed because the maximum allowed data source size of 825 GB was exceeded. (ID 100073)
More information

The drive in question is a little under 1TB in size in terms of total data.

Anyone out there had success with this, and if so did it require any particular steps to enable? Based on reading it should have been a case of "apply update and job done", but it doesn't appear so.

Thanks,

Nick.

what does it mean to backup a share?

When backing up a windows server I have the option of backing up a volume, and also backing up shares. If I choose to back up a share, does that backup the data in the share or only the fact that it is a share. If I do not back up shares and restore all the data in a volume, would the shares be restored or would I have to reassign them?

Make secondary DPM as primary protection-switched

Hi,

we have 2 DPM servers, DPM2 (primary), DPM3 (secondary)

some of cluster protected machines show protection-switched on DPM2 and cannot be protected with DPM3 (indirectly)

this is due to o previous server DPM1 being a primary and pulled out of the environment (over a year ago)

how can we make DPM2 the primary server for those few Clustor machines?

How to Open the FailedFilesLog.txt File (statement), and How to Increase the 100 File Limit (question)

$
0
0

It took us a while to figure this out, so I'm posting this in case it's helpful for someone out there. Plus, I have a question...

DPM gave the following error for one of our file servers:

Description: The replica of Volume D:\ on <servername> is inconsistent with the protected data source. Number of files skipped for synchronization due to errors has exceeded the maximum allowed limit of 100 files on this data source (ID 32538 Details: Internal error code: 0x809909FE)

Recommended action: Review the failure errors for individual files from the log file \\?\Volume{8492c150-f195-11de-a186-001cc4ef89a0}\B1E9D373-2C03-464E-A472-99BC93DB1E2A\FailedFilesLog.txt and take appropriate action. If some files fail consistently, you can exclude the folders containing these files by modifying the protection group or moving the files to another location.

So, how do you actually open the FailedFilesLog.txt file shown in this DPM alert? What is this path referring to? Well, this is the mount point for the protected server's replica volume on the DPM server, which is mounted under \Program Files\Microsoft DPM\DPM\Volumes\Replica\servername\File System. Here you'll see the mount points for all of the server's protected volumes. However, if you try to open one of these mounted volumesin Windows Explorer, you'll get Access Denied, even if you have administrator rights. (If someone knows of a way around this, please let me know). As a workaround, you can access this mounted volume in an elevatedcommand prompt. Steps:

  1. Open an Administrator Command Prompt
  2. Type mountvol <AnyAvailableDriveLetter>: \\?\Volume{VolumeGUID}
  3. Example:  mountvol m: \\?\Volume{8492c150-f195-11de-a186-001cc4ef89a0}   Note that we're only using the first part of the path to the FailedFilesLog.txt file given in the DPM alert, starting from \\? and ending after the} character.
  4. Next, type m: to change to the newly mounted m: drive.
  5. Then type cd B1E9D373-2C03-464E-A472-99BC93DB1E2A   This is actually a folder name so we're just going into this folder.
  6. Finally type dir and you should see the FailedFilesLog.txt file. This file can be copied to another location where it's easier to use (i.e. in Windows Explorer).
  7. Be sure to unmount this volume when you're done by typing mountvol m: /d in the command prompt. (Mountvol reference:http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc772586(WS.10).aspx.)

What a pain, eh? But at least by reviewing the FailedFilesLog.txt file you can determine which files or folders caused the sync to fail and thus take action accordingly.

Now, here's my question: Where is that registry key that lets me adjust the limit of 100 files that DPM allows to be skipped before it fails the replica? Hopefully someone out there will tell me. I know this can be done because Kapil Malhotra said so in this post: http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.dataprotectionmanager/browse_thread/thread/a179fa30fb50c9b0/e9a348f2a9386063?lnk=raot.

Also, does anyone know what the internal error code 0x809909FE means in this alert? Knowing this my help us determine what caused these files to fail. Interestingly, in the FailedFilesLog.txt file, it gave a different error code next to each failed file: 0x80070002.

Recover DeDuped Recovery Points

After sorting out an incredible mess Storage Spaces seems to be well known for when a physical drive takes a crap I am now in what almost feels like deeper doo doo!! I’ve been using DPM 2012 R2 Version 4.2.1254.0 for quite some time. The Server with the Storage Spaces mess is a 2012 R2 OS as well. To add to the fun I had had dedupe turned on the Server being backed up. The DPM Server seems to have all the backups which would be 3 recovery points per day with 5 days retention and no tapes. I am able to do the Recovery both to "original location" and to Network Location. However, as YOU would know "original location" produces an error about missing volume: \\ ?\Volume{6460399a-ef18-4e02-90a5db1ebaf20962}\ . So I tried to restore it to the Network Location and use the "missing or crashed" volume that has been deleted and recreated/rebuilt in Storage Spaces. I get a conglomeration of folders which looks like the info needs to "restore or rehydrate" the deduped data but I’ll be switched if I can get it to work. I’ve attached a screenshot of the file structure DPM Recovery puts on the recreated volume V:\ on Destination Server if that might be of any help.

Storage Spaces, Deduplication, DPM: am I NUTS??!!! What happened to the old days .bkf??? Any help, articles or direction to head to would sure be appreciated……..   The bottom line here is the recovery points all contain 465 +/-Gb in size which is correct, however, when DPM lays it back out either in the newly created Volume on the original Server OR another location it is conglomeration of files that appear to need hydration.

DPM 2012 with SP1 - Windows Server 2012 R2 File Server with Deduplication Volumes Enabled Tape Backup

$

Hi,

We've been using DPM for many years and have now upgraded to DPM 2012 SP1 Rollup 7. We can happily backup our Windows Server 2012 R2 deduped data volumes and it works fine.

But, when we try to then do end of Month backup on to a Tape, it suddenly fails. The error message we get is :

"The Operation failed since DPM was unable to access the file/folder \\?\GLOBALROOT\Device\HarddiskVolumeShadowCopy33533\4876e0d9-0fbc-4b13-b8cd-a76a054e0eb3\Full\HappyDays\SmartDoc3.doc on  DPM01.domain.local. This could be due to the file/folder being corrupt or the file system on the volume being corrupt. (ID 2036 Details: The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable (0x80070570))"

I can confirm that there are no errors on the file system or file corruption as reported by Chkdsk and also as we can open/write to the same files both, from original disk location and DPM disk backup.

Yet, we can backup the same source files that it complains are corrupt if we disable data de-duplication on that volume?

Anyone come across this issue or can help with suggestion?

Kind regards,

Luthfur

DPM 2012 R2 synchronizations fail after 1hour 20 min. Error Code 60

Clean install of both Server 2012 R2, DMP 2012 R2, and SQL 2012 SP1

Everything is patched and current.

However, all backup jobs fail after 1 hour and 20 min with: The protection agent on MYDPMSERVER.WTF was temporarily unable to respond because it was in an unexpected state. (ID 60 Details: Internal error code: 0x809909B0)

This happens regardless of the server OR client i'm attempting to backup.  Backup jobs WILL complete successfully, if the amount of data is being backup'd up can be moved in under 1 hour and 20 min.

Anyone having a similar issue?  I'm at a total loss.

What does this option do in the recovery console of DPM 2012? Also, why isn't it enabled? Trying to search a recovery point for a file but it only appears to filter the current folder shown.

Thanks, Rob.
