Spanned Extended Dynamic Volume on Windows 2012 PS

Hi,

some peers of mine had the idea to convert a basic disk on a Win 2012 to a dynamic disk.

Then they Extended a volume so that now there is a drive letter X: with two assigned volumes.
DPM recognizes two different volumes with the same drive letter X:

When I configure protection for one of those volumes (shown with the same content) DPM says that there is a mountpoint pointing to the other volume and asks to protect that volume aswell.
by the way DPM Shows two drive X: with the same Content.

So for me it seems that DPM does not really recognize that dynamic, extended volume and so I ask myself if it is a supported szenario to protect something like this?

Thanks in advance

regards

/stefan

D2D2T backup fails on dedup folume due to curroption on replica (ID 2036 Details: The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable (0x80070570))

Hi All,

When I am running a tape job for a dedup file server, the backup fails with following error

Description:        The Operation failed since DPM was unable to access the file/folder \\?\GLOBALROOT\Device\HarddiskVolumeShadowCopy1505\197d1387-eb5a-4a87-a459-06d757b2d875\Full\DATA\General\Knowles Limited\95864 Primeplace Limited v Knowles Limited\Letters\Thumbs.db on  UKDAR1BK011.hillintl.com. This could be due to the file/folder being corrupt or the file system on the volume being corrupt. (ID 2036 Details: The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable (0x80070570))

The actual file on file server is accessible. what should be the next action plan.

Error trying to backup Windows 2012 File cluster

Hi everybody,

I'm really stuck,  so I hope that maybe someone will have the answer ...

Here's the problem:

When I trying to setting up a new protection group, i'm getting this error :

"DPM was unable to protect the members in the resource group [FILE_SHARE_NAME]. This resource group contains some resources that have dependencies which not present as part of this group. (ID: 199)"

Did someone already have this issue ?

Config :

- DPM 2012 R2 RollUp8

- Target server : Windows 2012 R2 with SOFS Cluster

Thanks

Client server missing available volumes after adding disks

Hi, I'm running DPM 2012 R2 with Update Rollup 8, and I'm having trouble setting up a protection group for my file server.  The client server is running 2012 R2.  Initially I installed the protection agent, but then added additional disks to the server before I created a protection group.  Now when I try to set up the protection group, only the original disks show up as available members.  In addition, the Refresh button is greyed out.  I've tried restarting both servers, with no luck change.  In addition, when I try to expand one of the disks, I get the error message "DPM cannot access the path [disk] because part of the path has been deleted or renamed (ID: 36)" Any suggestions?

DPM 2012 R2 Corrupting Access DB's

Hi

We have discovered that DPM seems to be corrupting Access DB's. We have just gone to restore some and no matter what version we select it is corrupt when we try to open it and Access runs a repair losing the table we need to restore (sods law).

We have successfully restored Access DB's in the past with no issues. I have run a manual recovery point on the data with an integrity check via PowerShell and can recover this successfully but we cannot recover what we need which is a major concern.

Reading an older post (below) it looks to have centred around McAfee and on checking ours it looks like an update to McAfee EPO left the DPM servers without AV exceptions which could be the issue.

https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/bbb20155-4981-41f8-8327-eca8a25d1d1a/microsoft-access-databases-corrupt-after-dpm-2010-restore?forum=dpmfilebackup

Is there a way to recover these db's from the older RPs without corruption or are we screwed?

Thanks

How can I reactivate the inactive protection

Hi,

I stopped the protection of backups in protection group and everything is now appearing as Inactive protection.

Is there any way I can make this active. Tried creating Protection Gropus but DPM asks to first delete the Inactive Protection Group.

Please help me on this.

Theft

Hello, I’m not sure if you are the right person to speak to, if not, please would you be able to forward this to the appropriate person. Thank you in advance for any help you are able to provide.

I have decided to move from Toronto On, to Vancouver BC. After a very short time here, I’ve been robbed twice. The last theft was a Seagate back up drive (red slim) purchased at the Best Buy 65 Dundas st West, in Toronto ON. It was purchased on Jan 3, 2016, by debit.

I hadn’t had a chance to register the device with Seagate yet, and I was under the assumption that the serial number of the device was on the receipt.

Seagate offers a back up program for a price , they can basically upload to a cloud the information off the drive. The information on that drive is irreplaceable and priceless.

I NEED the info to start building my life after relocation.

Can you trace ANY info off my receipt to acquire a serial number for the drive?, so I can register this item and purchase this (save my life) software.

I have contacted the local police, basically they said I’m beat.

The drive is practically brand new, however I’ve went paperless so EVERYTHING , (revenue Canada, health cards, birth certificates, tax returns, identifications) are on this drive….Including a lifetime of memories..

PLEASE, please if you can help at ALL, I will forever be in your debt.

Thank-you again

Individually selectable shares for datasources for online data protection (Azure)

We are running System Center Data Protection Manager 2012R2

I've created a protectiongroup which backups a few shares from our fileserver to disk. I want to leverage our offsite backup with Azure Backup / Online protection. When I enable online protection I'm able to select the datasources for Online protection.

My problem is that the different fileserver datasources are grouped together based on the physical drive where the files exist on the sourceserver.
I only want to select important shares for online protection, not all of them reducing costs.
When I use online protection for SQL or Hyperv based backups every datasource is Individually selectable. This is not the case with fileshares and online protection.

Is this possible with Online protection?

I also can't create 2 protectiongroups and split the important fileshare datasources across 2 different protectiongroups. That is also not supported. When u select a single share the whole physical drive where the share belongs can't be selected anymore.

Example image:
I only want to select the Dynamics$ share for Online protection. Not the Dynarent$ and 00 Algemeen$ share on the same physical drive, but I can only select all the shares with Online Protection

Consistency Check Vs Integrity Check

Hi All

Firstly, can anyone explain the difference between a consistency check and an integrity check? Are integrity checks faster?

The reason I ask is that we have found that DPM (2012 R2 UR4) is corrupting MS Access databases when it backs them up (no users are in them at the time) and the only way to cure this is to schedule periodic integrity checks against the volume they are stored on. At the moment, the only volume this is happening on is relatively small but I'm worried that if this spreads we will have to schedule  integrity checks against larger volumes (TBs at a time) which could cause a huge problem for us as these files could literally be anywhere on any server.

Secondly, has anyone else come up against this and found a solution that didn't involve having to take manual intervention at the data level?

Thanks

DPM end-user recovery for system disk

Hello,

We have DPM with configured end-user recovery. For each client computer there are backups for C:\ (Volume), Bare metal and System state. But when client opens tab "Previous versions" on C:\<some_path> - it is clean.

Can EUR be used for recover files on system disk, or only solution is share C:\ as \\server\c and backup it in addition to C:, by duplicating space on DPM?

Reccuring DPM erorr (0x80072746))

Hi all,

I have one issue with clustered file server (2 shares) backup using DPM 2012R2 UR9.

Time to time I'm getting error message and can't find the reason:

The DPM service was unable to communicate with the protection agent on DPMserverName.domainname.com. (ID 65 Details: An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host (0x80072746)).
Synchronization scheduler for protection group configured to execute   "Just before a recovery point". Recovery point creation scheduled once per day.

Also strange thing that when I'm trying to rerun job after the error occurs, mostly everything goes without any issues.

I also have a lot of other protection group/jobs on this DPM machine, and have problem only with one job/protection group.

Thank you.

Fail to backup fileserver after replace of server

Running DPM 2012R2 on Windows Server 2012R2. Had to replace the fileserver and did this:
Removed DPM agent on old server
Copied all filedata to new server
Set up all shares via registry import of shares
Renamed old server
Named new server to the old servername
Installed DPM agent.

Cannot perform backups of the new server and getting the following message:

Have removed it and readded to protection group, no difference.
Have removed and readded agent and restarted server inbetween, no difference.
We do not want to remove all the previously backed up data as we need to keep it.

Does anyone have any suggestions what might be the issues here?
Thanks for comments and suggestions.

DPM Azure backup failing

Hi,<o:p></o:p>

I am hoping someone on here can help with a very frustrating problem.<o:p></o:p>

I have a 5TB volume that has failed to create online recovery points to Azure Backup since 5th February. Local recovery points  to disk are completing without any issues 3 times a day.<o:p></o:p>

I have 25 other volumes ranging between 1TB and 500MB that are creating online recovery points on a nightly basis without any problems.<o:p></o:p>

The Online recovery point job runs for between 30 and 35 hours and can transfer between 95GB and 130GB then fails with the message "An unexpected error occurred while the job was running. (ID 104)" or "The Windows Azure Backup Agent cannot connect to the OBEngine service. (ID 100052)"<o:p></o:p>

I have checked the available capacity on the local drives and there is still 300GB capacity free on the scratch drive.

I have tried deleting the files in this directory and let DPM recreate them, but the result is still the same.<o:p></o:p>

I have also checked that we are running the latest Azure backup agent, and as of 15/03/16 we are (2.0.9028).<o:p></o:p>

Has anyone experienced similar problems and successfully rectified them or have any ideas of how I can resolve this situation?

DPM installation failure - SQL Server Reporting Services user cannot be changed

I'm trying to install DPM on a server 2012 R2 server. Straight after database selection I am given the following error:

The ReportServer$MSSQL12STD service is running under NT Service\ReportServer$MSSQL12STD credentials. We recommend that the service run under the NT Authority\NETWORK SERVICE account. In the Reporting Services Configuration tool, choose 'Service account', and then change the settings to the built-in Network Service account for MSSQL12STD instance of SQL Server.

When I go to SQL configuration I am unable to change the logon user for the service. The modal window says "not installed" under the "Log On" screen for the service. I have tried to stop and start the service and also restarted the server.

How can I repair this or change the logon user for the MS SQL reporting service?

How to use specific folder names in the backup rules ???

Hello everyone :) , i work in an IT department in france and I need some help :

i am new to SC DPM : I have configured a server (under Hyper-V ) with Microsoft Data Protection Manager on it, i followed the instructions given by this TechNet link : https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh758153.aspx .

(SQL server is OK)

i did the DPM Agent deployment via SCCM on a VM collection just to make sure that the agent is working well and it is OK , the agents are listed on the DPM console .

when i try to set up a new protection rule, i select my computer, i need to backup a folder wich contains the username : i.e. : on the computer named VM-W10 i need to backup 'c:\username' fodler but i can't use 'C:\%USERNAME%\' as folder path, and the  environement variable is not detected when i do this and on the agent ( computer side), it says that i cant synchronize, because there is no folder selected ...

anyone have an idea ?

moreover, i need to backup a folder inside the folder which contain the username : i.e. : I need to backup the 'C:\username\mail'  folder but we can't know in advance what is the name of the folder on C:\{username} on each computer who have the agent installed .

sorry for my bad english if any ...
