Drive shrink

$

Hi

We're planning to shrink the existing drives on some Win 2003 R2 SP2 servers to create a new drive/add capacity to another drive using a third-party tool. These servers are configured in DPM 2010. My doubt is: Will shrinking/extending the drives change their GUID? If so, will the existing DPM backups work?

Please help!

DPM 2012 doesn't save all files in folders

$

Greetings, community)

Does anybody know why DPM2012SP1 doesn't save all files from the protected folder?

For example:

I have some protected Laptops with DPM agents.

User defined some folders for protection (not system files).

After synchronization and creation a point of recovery, user can't find some files in that folder when he try to restore this folder. But some files are there.

So, my question:

How DPM determines what kind of files should be saved and another not?

Is it necessary to backup shares as well the volume they reside on in DPM 2010?

$

If you backup up the shares as well as the volume that they sit on, do you duplicate data in your backup by backing up the same data twice?

I am currently trying to reduce the size of my backups as I am close to the storage pool limit so need to reduce what I can.

Thanks,

Chris.

Adjusting SAP Protection Group in DPM 2010

Hi everyone

I ask for your support and skills to resolve this situation:

We have our SAP environment with DB2 in Production, Developing and Quality.

I made backup of SAP files (Network drives), DB2 backups place in an specific folder and 4 Snapshots.

All three are backup through one protection group in DPM 2010:

- Short-term: everyday at 9:00pm

- Long-term: weekly and monthly

- Compression active

We have LTO5 tapes so every protection group I configure uses at least one tape each time a backup is made.

My problem is that this SAP Protection Group uses 3 tapes in Short and Long term backup, wasting this tapes because if I sum all the backups it gives me approximately 1400Gb and LTO5 Ultrium tape has a 3TB capacity.

I don´t know how to configure this backups to be made and safe in 1 tape, so I need your help to solve this

Thanks in advanced

Unable to access my music, videos, films and other documents on my pen drive?

Hi! I use a pen drive to offload my computer data, including some music, videos, films and other documents. Yesterday, I did the same thing as usual. But, as I continued to open it in My Computer, the computer gave me a message and asked me to format it anyhow. But, it couldn’t be formatted. How can I copy off all my data on this pen drive? Is it failed? Do I have to buy a new one?

Now to avoid synchronization of Outlook archive files

Hello
I'm using DPM 2012 to backup our clustered File Server Windows 2012. Several users are keeping their Outlook archive file on the file server. These are rather large files (4+ GB). I've set up a synchronization every hour. Problem: every hour, all these pst archives are processed by DPM, I suppose because their last access date/time has been changed by Outlook. Is there a way to exclude these pst from the synchronization, but not from the recovery point creation ?

Share vs volume protection

$

I am currently protecting a set of user shares across sites globally distributed.

All data I need to protect are stored in one share. So I chose to select the users share, thereby automatically protecting everything within that share - perfect.

Now I need to exclude an underlying folder from protection, however this does not seem to be possible. If I had chosen to protect the share, using volume protection, it seems I would in fact be able to keep extending the protected folders and excluding seperate underlying folders.

I read these to post before I originally setup the configuration, however this behaviour is not mentioned:

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff399063.aspx

http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/dpmfilebackup/thread/27e8b4ef-4575-43ff-9168-8a049b103e03/

So this brings up two questions:

  • Is this behaviour expected or am I missing something?
  • If I change the protection of these data (within the protection group), from share to volume, what will happen on the DPM server, will it recognise the data, do some reconfiguring and run a cc and be done, or will it start all over again by creating a new replica, new retention cycle etc.

Any input is appreciated, thanks.

All backups works fine, besides one server, that his BMR backup to tape is keep failing.

This server BMR backup to disk is working fine, but when DPM tries to do this backup to Tape is fails with this error:

An unexpected error occurred while the job was running. (ID 104 Details: The parameter is incorrect (0x80070057))

Environment:

DPM Server:  DPM 2010, on windows server 2008 R2 standard.

Client with issue: File Server, on windows server 2008 standard.

i tried re-creating this BMR backup but it didnt helped.

2012 SP1, server crashes, possible cause VSS?

Hi everybody.

I'm new to SCDPM in genreral, and i'm having a few issues with the server.
In short, i'm going to list my setup underneath.

Physical HP server, Windows server 2008 R2, SCDPM 2012 SP1, 32gb ram, 279gb system drive (at the moment 189gb free), 32tb DAS with 27tb raid 50 partition.
All of the sudden our server becomes unresponsive after working perfectly for a few months, so i had to Cold boot it.
Now the server is up and running, but i have some errors in my event log saying that the system drive is full, even though it is not.
I suspect some shadow copies is messing stuff up.

Please tell if you need more information to analyse this problem.
Thanks in advance :-)

Actually, this USB flash drive could be detected by my computer. But, when I tried to open it, a “not formatted error” message popped out. The “properties” of this drive was also displayed as “RAW”. So, how could I access my inner data and fix this “RAW” problem? Please help me fix this!

Thoughts before protecting a 2-node filecluster

$

We're about to setup a new 2-node cluster, replacing our existing one.

Its a physical cluster running 2008R2. The current cluster is protected by Another Product.

All user data is obviously going to be migrated to the new cluster.

We'll need a Daily backup of all the files. Not sure how many files each drive has but we're talking millions.

My abstract questions Before utilizing dpm here is are;

Is DPM 2012 capable to fully protect a Windows 2012 HA Failover cluster with SC SP1 installed? Or is it still 2008R2 to be on the safe side?

What are the current limitations in dpm 2012 regarding amount of files on a drive/mp?

What are the recommended implementation when protecting Fileclusters

Will we likely run into situations where DPM will triggers consistency-checks that wont have time to complete til next scheduled job is triggered? Have read other posts here about frequent access to many files, like a I/O-intensive application or a antivirus tends to be an issue

If so, what options does one have to trim this, except splitting up data on more disks which doesn't feel like an options since design is set by other factors? I'm talking settings in DPM to i.e reducing consistency checks, speed them up or so.

disks are between 200gb to 2100gb.

Recovering a file created and deleted between recovery points

$

A user creates a file and then accidentally deletes it later that day (before a recovery point is created, but after synchronization occurs). In this situation, is there any way to recover the deleted file from the synchronized version, or do later synchronizations overwrite earlier ones and make recovery impossible? In other words, can I recover from a certain synchronization time or only the latest?

From the DPM planning guide:

"For example, a volume is synchronized hourly and a recovery point for the volume is created at 8:00 A.M., 12:00 P.M., and 6 P.M. A user makes changes to a file on the volume at 1:30 P.M.; however, when another user makes changes an hour later, the file is inadvertently corrupted, and you are asked to recover the file with the first user's changes. Because the changes at 1:30 P.M. were made after the most recent recovery point was created at 12:00 P.M., you cannot recover the file from the most recent recovery point. However, you can manually create a recovery point from the appropriate synchronization of that replica and then recover the file from that new recovery point."

Does that last line not apply if synchronization has occurred after the deletion?

Recovery points: 8:00 AM, 12:00 PM, 6:00 PM
Synchronization: 15 minutes

How do you avoid this situation? I am aware of the recovery point quantity limitation. Shadow copies on the file server? Recycle Bin on the file server?

Backing Up Large 'Backup File' drive

$

We have a number of large backup files stored on disk produced by a third party backup tool. We need to back these large files up periodically to tape however this process tends to be a little on the slow side.

For instance, if I have a volume with the following files on...

LargeFile.1

LargeFile.2

LargeFile.3

LargeFile4

... and I kick off a tape based backup of the volume these files sit on, then tape backup overruns.

What happens if LargeFile.2 is modified on disk and is actively used during the tape backup? Am I correct in thinking that a snapshot of the whole volume is taken via VSS when the tape backup starts, then the tape backup uses this VSS snapshot as the data source for the tape backup? Therefore if modifications are made to LargeFile.2 whilst the backup to tape is running the data going to tape is unaffected and thus not in a corrupt state?

Data Protection Manager 2012 Single Instance Storage

$

Hello,

I have already tried to search for an answer for this question but still don't really "get it". I understand that previous versions of DPM use Single Instance Storage, this is the first time I have used DPM and I'm starting at version 2012 installed on server 2012. In my testing I can see that DPM 2012 seems to create a new volume for each system its backing up, so everything looks separated across different volumes, I also notice that data deduplication feature is enabled which is assume DPM did that during installation, however it isn't actually enabled on any particular volume so it isn't doing anything. Naturally I would have assumed that DPM 2012 being a brand new product and compatible with server 2012 that it would utilise the data deduplication feature of the server..... but it's not. so my question is, does DPM 2012 utilise data deduplication or single instance storage, if not how can we save lots of data from duplicate backups of things like DC's, File servers and Exchange Mailbox servers? all of which have high levels of duplicated data.

Also, I don't full understand the difference between SIS and De-dupe, am I correct in saying that SIS just removes the need for an entire duplicated file (regardless of its filename) and de-dupe actually compares bits and bytes of data across multiple files regardless of file type, name or size...?

thanks for any further information

DPM2012 - Error 0x80990AA5 while running an integrity check

I'm trying to perform a Integrity Check on a protected server that is across a WAN and I get the following Error:

DPM encountered an error while performing an operation for \\?\Volume{e0f28da5-8c48-11e2-941c-806e6f6e6963}\sharedfolder\Admin\Marketing\Battery display pack\Thumbs.db on dpmservername.SEC.local (ID 2033 Details: Internal error code: 0x80990AA5)

Sometimes if fails on a pdf file, sometimes a jpg, it's just random.

I was finally able to perform a Consistency check after three tries, however, I want to do an integrity check as that allows me to see if indeed there was anything inconsistent, whereas a consistency check doesn't report thing being wrong, it just corrects them if they are.

Details:

DPM2012 SP1 Server on 2008R2 SP1

1.7TB of Data on the protected server

Server2003 OS on the protected server.

DPM 2012 sp1 restore issue

$

Here is my error

The recovery jobs for Volume E:\ that started at Friday, May 3, 2013 9:32:14 AM, with the destination of DPM0.abc.forest.org, have completed. Most or all jobs failed to recover the requested data. (ID 3111)

DPM is attempting to backup or restore deduped files, which requires target to be a NTFS volume and deduplication should be disabled for that volume;. (ID 30242 Details: Internal error code: 0x80990AD2)

I might be nitpicking here but... My volume is NTFS and it says deduplication "should" be disabled which indicates that it doesnt have to be.

Why can i not restore to a location with deduplication turned on? What does it even care my dedupe job should be fully independent of putting data on the drive.

My biggest grip is i just have not other place to restore this data to. Its about 15TB worth of data and the drive has plenty of space to restore.
