Drive shrink

Hi

We're planning to shrink the existing drives on some Win 2003 R2 SP2 servers to create a new drive/add capacity to another drive using a third-party tool. These servers are configured in DPM 2010. My doubt is: Will shrinking/extending the drives change their GUID? If so, will the existing DPM backups work?

Please help!

Protecting two node file cluster

I guess the DPM client will have to be installed on each node. However from then on I am lost. How do I configure DPM server 2012 to deal with a cluster? Do I point it to the cluster resource (ip address) associated with the network file share? It is frustrating to google this and only hit answers regarding "hyper-v"

Unable to protect previously protected data on other DPM 2010 server

Hello

There are 3 servers 2 DPM 2010 servers and file servers 1A (primary dpm server) 1B (dpm server) 1C (file server)

Data from server 1C was protected using 1B server, but later dpm agent from 1C server was removed and protection group successfully uninstalled from 1B dpm server.

Now when I try to protect data from 1C server using 1A DPM:

1) I can't expand disk E: to chose data (I need to protect not the whole disk but specific data) but disk C: on this same server expands normally (see screenshot)

http://i41.tinypic.com/25ur11k.jpg

2) When I finish wizard and get these messages

http://i43.tinypic.com/219x7ba.jpg

http://i43.tinypic.com/2pyz12h.jpg

So somehow server 1A thinks that data from server 1C is still protected by server 1B, ignoring the fact that the dpm agent of 1B server was unistalled and a new dpm agent linked to 1A server was installed on 1C server.

Thank you for reading, please help.

What is best option??

hello,

I have dpm 2012 sp1. In my office are using shadow copy to backup the file server in a disk of 3TB.

They are using only DPM for backup to tape.

They told me that they are using like this because with shadow copy the end-user can restore his information alone.

I can do that with DPM? What are the advantages to add the 3TB to my DPM?

thanks

How can I prioritise a restore job to run before other scheduled jobs in System Centre Data Protection Manager?

DPM 2012 cannot restore backups made with DPM 2010 since upgrade

Dear Experts

I have a client who has 6 DPM 2012 servers that were upgraded from DPM 2010 and since doing the upgrade the client can no longer restore any backups that were originally done on the 2010 servers, but works for any backups done using the 2012 servers. Any ideas why this is the case?

Which Firewall ports need to be open to backup a DMZ in a workgroup using SCDMP2012

I have looked online without any success to the question below.  Any answered would be greatly appreciated.

I have a server in a DMZ.  It's in a workgroup with a local admin account.  However, I need to find out what ports to open up on the firewall to get it backed up into scdpm 2012.

What ports to open from DPM to DMZ

What port(s) to open from DMZ to DPM

System center 2012 sp1 recovery points failing to write

$

Having had system center 2012 sp1 working within our system, albeit somewhat flakily, since it came out it has developed a problem which I cannot find the answer to. I currently have 15 protection groups backing up 22 servers, both local and remote. Altogether the used disk space is 15tb and I have 4tb free. Last friday at lunch time everything synchronised fine and create the relevant recovery point. Since then 10 groups are still working fine and 5 are having problems. As an example: a group that is backing up the fileserver is backing up 4 different drive letters. F is backing up, G is backing up, M is backing up but H decided to abandon ship yesterday (tuesday lunch time) and is now saying replica inconsistent. If you run a consistency check on it, it runs and gives you a green tick but doesn't write a recovery point.

I deleted the least important of the groups and recreated it from scratch, manually importing the data (250+GB) having created a new protection group. The same thing happened. Any ideas as to what this could be?

I also have the problem of my tapedrive currently saying it is offline and not connecting, it connected back once today and then went offline again. I cannot recreate the XML file for the dpmla as the exe to do this does not work and if i recreate it manually it doesn't make a difference either.

Thanks for any help in advance.

Maintain DPM protection of clustered file service during migration to new cluster

$

So this seems to be something that I would expect to see some documentation on but there is nothing that I can find.

We have a File Service on a server 2008R2 cluster (ClusterA) whose hardware is now pretty much end of life. We have a nice new set of hardware running server 2012 (ClusterB) and we are in the process of migrating the various Services (Roles in 2012) over to the new cluster.

Most of the service have migrated with the migration wizard without incident but I am running into something of a problem with one of the clustered file services that is protected by DPM.
There does not appear to be a way for me to tell DPM that ServiceA is now on ClusterB. Obviously I could just drop and re-add it but I really do not want to lose the current history we have in the protection group and at the moment do not have the capacity for me to run 2 copies until the ServiceA.ClusterA.domain.com expires.

Has anyone run into this or found a solution?

Is it supported to backup a file share on DPM 2012 using the server itself?

Hi,

Can someone tell me if DPM 2012 is capable of backing up it's own file shares?

Is there much mileage in backing up at the folder level as opposed to the file share?

Thanks

Shadow copy errors backing up from server 2012

$

Setup:

DPM Server = DPM 2012 SP1 running on Server 2008 R2.

Protected Server = Server 2012 Standard.

We are trying to backup 10TB+ of data from server 2012.  Various file sizes from a few MB to 4TB stored in multiple folders (F:\db_backups\folder1\ then F:\db_backups\folder2\   etc)

The F drive on the on the protected server is 18.4TB total wih about 8TB free.

I have tired setting up the protection group in mutlple ways.  For example, 1 datasource being the db_backups folder or the entire F: volume or each subfolder as a seperate datasource.  We only run this backup once a week for long term tape backup (no shortterm disk backups)

All backups of that server/protection group fail with shadow copy errors.  The errors from DPM vary, but the errors from the procted server are the same.

I have contacted MS Support, the DPM team ran diagnostics but then directed me to the setup team to troubleshoot VSS from the protected server.  Various things were changed, but nothing has helped.  Right now shadow copies are set to no limit on the same volume.

Here is a sample error from DPM:

DPM failed to access
the volume \\?\GLOBALROOT\Device\HarddiskVolumeShadowCopy18\
on PROTECTEDSERVER.domain.com. This could be due to

1) Cluster failover during backup or

2) Inadequate disk space on the volume.

(ID 2040 Details: The device is not ready (0x80070015))

Errors from the protected server event log.

The shadow copies of volume F: were aborted because the shadow copy storage failed to grow.

We've tried multipe VSS settings, minimized IO on the volume, tried pointing VSS to another volume.  Regardless, it vails with that shadow copy error.  It's almost like it wants to do a 1 to 1 shadow copy, and not deleting anything as it progress through the different files being backed up.

Any suggestions?

Upgrading DPM 2010 to DPM 2012 SP1 to Backup VM's located on a Windows 2008 R2 SP1 Cluster utilizing Clustered Shared Volumes

Hello.

I have a Win 2k8R2 SP1 cluster (5 Hosts) hosting VM's on cluster shared volumes (Three seperate cluster shared volumes).  I am currently using DPM 2010 to backup VM's located on that cluster.  I am in the process of preparing to upgrade my DPM 2010 server to DPM 2012 SP1.  Do I need to apply the following hotfixes; KB975354, KB975921, KB977381 on the Host servers in the cluster or does the SP1 service pack superceede the need for these hotfixes?

Thank you for your time.

Hello,

We have 17 DPM 2010 servers providing End User Recovery for their Files and Departmental Shares. We are looking to collect the history of the EUR activities like:

1. How many recovery performed per month?

2. How long it's take times?

3. How big is the data?

Could anyone help me?

DPM 2012 Large File Server CC Advise

Hi,

In relation to the (now locked) thread of http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/ff9b8081-68dd-4c0f-8fd4-7b23950c4f20/consistency-check-takes-forever-on-large-volumes I would like some advice.

Our main file server holds just over 2TB of files and is experiencing the slow CC. The OS is a VM and the data drive is a pass-through disk to the SAN (attached via SAS). From the last post of the thread, my thought is to create a VHDX on the attached SAN volume and move (copy/restore/etc carefully) the data into this file, then attach that inside the VM (and delete the old data).

Is it correct then that DPM will backup the VM AND this VHDX and CC's will be much quicker?

Just trying to get my understanding 100% before going ahead!

Thanks
Tim

DPM2012 - Backup file server via share or volume

$

Hello,

I'm currently setting up DPM2012 on our network, and am investigation the best way to backup our clustered file server.

Is the recommendation to backup via volume or via share?

If I were to select both, would it cause a problem, or would it cause the data to be backed up twice?

Many thanks,

Martin Robson.

Backing up 800GB+ of small files word, excel etc.

Hello,

I have greated a new fileserver where i initialy did not have much data and the size of the disk was only configured to 40GB. Now i have extend the disk to 900GB and i have copied 800GB of small files word, excel, pdf types.

Autogrowth was set to enable but did not seem to work so i modifed the disk allocation so that the disk could hold 900GB.

My question is how can it be that only 200mb is transffered in 24 minuts. In this speed it will take forever to get the files backed up.

DPM 2010 SP1 Replica Fails On Folders That No Longer Exist on Target

$

We are experiencing recurring replica failures on multiple protection groups.  Each time we encounter this failure, it is on a folder that no longer exists on the backup target, and the error references the DPM server's volume.  For instance, in the example below, the folder "...\mrojas01" no longer exists on the target because that user has left the company and their data has been removed.  However, DPM for some reason throws a fit and aborts the recovery point and marks the replica as inconsistent.  I can go manually create the folder again on the source, run the backup and it will then succeed.  However, as soon as it encounters another user that no longer exists, it will fail there.    Help!

Manual replica creation of DeDup Volumes

$

Hi,

we are on the way to update a lot of our file Servers to Windows Server 2012.
DeDup will be enabled on the volumes.

We are going to to backup these voumes via DPM2012SP1.

Now my question: Is it possible to create a Manual replica (for example with the help of USB external drives) for dedup enabled volumes or does the replica creation process have to be triggered from within DPM console so that all data will be transfered over the Network?

Thanks in advance
