Consistency Check seems to run indefinatly

Hi,

I have DPM running at our main office.  We backup a remote office server with 1.5TB of data over a VPN connection.  It was working fine until our local storage pool drives suffered physical failure.  All fixed and had to recreate protection groups.  Initial backup of remote server was slow, and when it finished it said it was inconsistent.  I ran a consistency check and it took a really long time and got interrupted several times.  Then it finally looked like it finished with no errors.  I tried to create a replication point and it failed saying it was not consistent.  I started the consistency check over again.  This time it ran and it counted up to 2,034.12MB in the Data Transferred column.  It has now been stuck at that number for 30 hours but still lists as in progress.

In looking at dpmra.exe on using process monitor the protected computer, when data was being transferred I could see file name in the logs.  Now that it has stopped counting all i have seen for the last 30 hours is registry open, close and query keys. A sample from the process monitor log is below.  Anyone know if this is normal, or if something is stuck, or if there is some other problem?

Thanks,

Derek

Effect of defragmentation on DPM

Hello

We're planning to schedule defragmentation on some volumes on file servers. These volumes are relatively bigger (4-5TB each). I just wanted to know if there will be an impact on DPM backups after defragmentation, will DPM take a backup of all the changed blocks all over again or will the consistency check compare these blocks and leave them as-it-is?

One of the high profile user stored some critical data on his home folder yesterday and that was backed up overnight now user has deleted that information from the file server and he wants it to be deleted from backup as well.

I backup the whole drive in DPM.

Please suggest if there is a way to do this.

Hi everyone,

Having lots of issues with backup of remote offices.  We have dpm running at our HQ  backing up local files fine.  2 office are having a very hard time.  One remote office has 600mb in data, it does the initial replication and then says its not consistent.  Does a CC and takes a very long time, finally finishes with no errors I can find, but when a replication point tries to be created it says its out of sync and needs to run a CC.  This repeats and takes over a week each time it runs a CC.  So since it never thinks its consistent, I am not getting backups.  What might be happening that is making this so difficult to get.

I am having the same issue with another remote office with 1.6TB of data, but would be happy to get the office with less data working to start.

These office were being backed up prior to me taking over the backups, but the storage pool on the DPM server crashed and had to be replaced so I am trying to get the backups working again from scratch.

Any help or advise would be greatly appreciated.

Shadow copy errors backing up from server 2012

$

Setup:

DPM Server = DPM 2012 SP1 running on Server 2008 R2.

Protected Server = Server 2012 Standard.

We are trying to backup 10TB+ of data from server 2012.  Various file sizes from a few MB to 4TB stored in multiple folders (F:\db_backups\folder1\ then F:\db_backups\folder2\   etc)

The F drive on the on the protected server is 18.4TB total wih about 8TB free.

I have tired setting up the protection group in mutlple ways.  For example, 1 datasource being the db_backups folder or the entire F: volume or each subfolder as a seperate datasource.  We only run this backup once a week for long term tape backup (no shortterm disk backups)

All backups of that server/protection group fail with shadow copy errors.  The errors from DPM vary, but the errors from the procted server are the same.

I have contacted MS Support, the DPM team ran diagnostics but then directed me to the setup team to troubleshoot VSS from the protected server.  Various things were changed, but nothing has helped.  Right now shadow copies are set to no limit on the same volume.

Here is a sample error from DPM:

DPM failed to access
the volume \\?\GLOBALROOT\Device\HarddiskVolumeShadowCopy18\
on PROTECTEDSERVER.domain.com. This could be due to

1) Cluster failover during backup or

2) Inadequate disk space on the volume.

(ID 2040 Details: The device is not ready (0x80070015))

Errors from the protected server event log.

The shadow copies of volume F: were aborted because the shadow copy storage failed to grow.

We've tried multipe VSS settings, minimized IO on the volume, tried pointing VSS to another volume.  Regardless, it vails with that shadow copy error.  It's almost like it wants to do a 1 to 1 shadow copy, and not deleting anything as it progress through the different files being backed up.

Any suggestions?

DPM 2010 SP1 Replica Fails On Folders That No Longer Exist on Target

$

We are experiencing recurring replica failures on multiple protection groups.  Each time we encounter this failure, it is on a folder that no longer exists on the backup target, and the error references the DPM server's volume.  For instance, in the example below, the folder "...\mrojas01" no longer exists on the target because that user has left the company and their data has been removed.  However, DPM for some reason throws a fit and aborts the recovery point and marks the replica as inconsistent.  I can go manually create the folder again on the source, run the backup and it will then succeed.  However, as soon as it encounters another user that no longer exists, it will fail there.    Help!

Manual replica creation of DeDup Volumes

$

Hi,

we are on the way to update a lot of our file Servers to Windows Server 2012.
DeDup will be enabled on the volumes.

We are going to to backup these voumes via DPM2012SP1.

Now my question: Is it possible to create a Manual replica (for example with the help of USB external drives) for dedup enabled volumes or does the replica creation process have to be triggered from within DPM console so that all data will be transfered over the Network?

Thanks in advance

Hi!

We need to protect our Laptop Users data who travel a lot. Can DPM do that by keeping a synchronized copy of each user's data on the backup server and can backup work over the internet?

Thanks.

I am having trouble getting my file backup to run after an upgrade from DPM 2010 to DPM 2012 SP1. Due to the upgrade every single protected data source entered into consistency check, this is expected behaviour, and most of these cc has finished without problems. I have a single agent left, that constantly fails. Almost immediately after a cc is started the agent throws the following event in the application log of the client server.

Faulting application name: DPMRA.exe, version: 4.1.3313.0, time stamp: 0x50ad9909

Faulting module name: FileWriterHelperPlugin.DLL, version: 4.1.3313.0, time stamp: 0x50ad994d

Faulting process id: 0x81c

Faulting application start time: 0x01ceb8504e52f3a7

Faulting application path: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Data Protection Manager\DPM\bin\DPMRA.exe

Faulting module path: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Data Protection Manager\DPM\bin\FileWriterHelperPlugin.DLL

Report Id: 2fcb217d-2444-11e3-928c-00155d0a5800

I’ve tried uninstalling/installing however this has not solved the problem.

Any help to solve this issue will be greatly appreciated.

DPM 2012 SP1 End User Recovery - Windows 2012 Clustered File Server - Using node name instead of file server name

$

Hi,

I am seeing a really strange issue relating to end user recovery/recover previous versions for all shares on our Windows 2012 file server cluster.

Infrastructure consists of the following:

DPM 2012 SP1 Server : DPM01

HYPERV/FILESERVER CLUSTER: (NODE1 and NODE2)

FILE Server Resource with the following:

SERVER NAME: YOA-DATA02

SHARENAME: DATA

----------------------

The problem I am seeing is end users are unable to use the recover previous versions feature from their client. This is working fine on our non-clustered file server.  Looking at the MS-ShareMapConfiguration container in AD I can see the objects that have been created by the DPM server. However when I look at the properties of the object the MS-productionSrvShare rather than list the\\ServerName\Sharename (\\YOA-DATA02\DATAit lists the node name of the cluster. (\\NODE1\DATA) furthermore there is an additional entry for the same share listed under the second node in the cluster.

Is there anything specific that I need to do to get DPM to populate AD with the correct server name for the clustered file server?

Cheers

Paul

File backup and restore

Hi,

Can anyone please help me understand the below:

How DPM will backup files from client machines? Technology used ( snapshot based? )

What are the backup options available?

Is there a way to backup files whenever they change?

If so, is there a way to backup only the incremental backup (delta changes done on that file) ?

Quick reply is highly appreciated!!

Thanks and Regards,

DPM Recovery job keeps failing with semaphore timeout error

Hi

I've started a recovery jon from a DPM 2010 server to a virtual machine which has to transfer about 600GB of data. It keeps failing every 7-8 hrs with the following error:

The DPM service was unable to communicate with the protection agent on DPMserver.domain.com. (ID 52 Details: The semaphore timeout period has expired (0x80070079)).

The ESXi hardware on which the VM is hosted is new, the DPM server also is 6 months old and has no network issues. The two servers are hosted in the same DC. Please help.

There is a specific folder on every server that I would like to exclude from DPM backups.  Currently I see no way to set a global exclusion rule for all systems - I have to go into the Protection Group and uncheck the folder for each protected computer. Is there a way to set this globally?

Number of files skipped for synchronization exceeed 100

Hi

I'm trying to take a backup of a Win 2003 file server on DPM 2010 but the consistency check is failing repeatedly with error:

Number of files skipped for synchronization due to errors has exceeded the maximum allowed limit of 100 files on this data source (ID 32538 Details: Internal error code: 0x809909FE)

Upon checking the FailedFilesLog, there are .txt .pdf .dwg and a lot more files. These files change everytime the job fails.

I did add the key:

  HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Microsoft Data Protection Manager\Agent\ContinueOnFailure
   MaxFailedFiles:REG_DWORD:270F (dec 9999)

Then net stop dpmra followed by net start dpmra but that did not help. The job still keeps failing.

The hex code mentioned in the FailedFilesLog is 0x80990aa5.

I understand that ErrorCode: 0x80990AA5 =  DSMMTF_E_CORRUPT_DATA

Does this mean I need to run chkdsk on the file server? Or on the DPM replica volume?

Resolution steps:
Verify that both protected server and the domain controller are responding. Then in Microsoft Management Console (MMC), open the Group Policy Object Editor snap-in for the local computer and verify the local DNS client settings in Local Computer Policy\Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\Network\DNS Client.

(Note: The DNS Client is disabled at both DPM and agent server)

File restores to original location fail with communications error

I am attempting to do some test restores from DPM 2012 SP1.  I have multiple servers and guest VM's protected both as servers and as VM's.  When I try to restore a single file to the original location on the file server (Windows 2008 Guest OS), the restore fails with the following error:

Affected area: D:\
Occurred since: 11/11/2013 2:47:15 PM
Description: The recovery jobs for Volume D:\ that started at Monday, November 11, 2013 2:40:08 PM, with the destination of fileserver.internal.com, have completed. Most or all jobs failed to recover the requested data. (ID 3111)
DPM failed to communicate with DPM.internal.com because the computer is unreachable. (ID 41 Details: No such host is known (0x80072AF9))
 More information
Recommended action: 1) Make sure that DPM.internal.com is online and remotely accessible from the DPM server.
2) If a firewall is enabled on DPM.internal.com, make sure that it is not blocking requests from the DPM server.
3) If you are using backup LAN, make sure that the backup LAN settings are valid.
On the Jobs tab in the Monitoring tasks area, group jobs by type to view details of the recovery jobs.
 Retry the recovery job...

Note that the communicatons failure is with the DPM server itself!  A restore to an alternative location on the DPM server succeeds very quickly, but trying to restore to the file server fails.  Here is information on the environment:

DPM: Windows 2012 Guest VM running on Windows 2012 Host.  It has a static IPv4 address for both the data and backup VLANs.  The Windows firewall is disabled.

File Server: Windows 2008 (R1) Guest VM running on Windows 2008 host.  It has a static IPv4 address for the data VLAN only.  It is running McAfee AV with an exclusion for the DPM directories.  The Windows Firewall is disabled.

I can ping back and forth between the two servers, and I've run the RPC and Webcon tests with no errors.  Can anyone tell me what I can look at next?

Thanks,
Joe
